I've only had 2 computers, and have never OC'ed, but that was because I was young when I had them, I'm hoping to OC my laptop once it arrives in the mail

You don't have a selection for "yes, I overclock, but I don't keep it overclocked all the time :P"

So you are saying that you only overclock it when you start a game or something? It doesn't really matter if you keep it overclocked all the time, I have done that to ALL my computers and I have yet to have one die on me.

I can't OC with this 965WH board, I shouldn't have built this one on a tight budget. If I had a good OC'ing board I could trust, I would pull more out of it, it doesn't hurt it. Some ppl say "it decreases life span", and the normal life span is 10yr's(I dunno), they say it decreases it by 2yr's. I don't plan on keeping it for 8yr's anyway.
The DS3 is a great overclocking board, even the rev 1.3, many people get their E6300's to at least 3.2Ghz.

As for me, I overclocked it the day I put it together.

I OC my GPU and it kicks out some real improvements in gameplay. It's a junky card, but nonetheless the difference in OC'ing is amazing.

I think it is a great way to enhance performance and getter a better value on your dollar. I will always tweak/OC my computers from now on, unless building for others and they request otherwise.

Don't overclock your laptop.

For one, you wont have any BIOS options to do so, you will have to find a Windows based app.

Second, laptops have poor cooling, so overclocking them will dramatically increase the heat, and most likely cause it to crash.

You could OC your laptop till a volt increase is required. As Omega said don't increase the voltage as it is the reason of increased heat.

Doesn't compare a stock to an overclocked but it show your chip oced to 3.3 beating pretty much everything. Overclocking yields very large performance gains.

I found some benchmarks before (can't remember where) and it was comparing the AMD X2's, the AMD FX's and the Core 2 Duos. They had an E6300 OC'ed to 2.6Ghz and an E6300 @ stock (1.86Ghz). There wasn't all that much difference between the two... The stock E6300 was getting like 60FPS in most games and they were getting 90FPS when it was OC'ed @ 2.6Ghz.

20FPS isn't really all that much, you could that + more by decreasing your resolution probably.

Probably because it was somewhat bottlenecked by the video card.

You can have a Core 2 Duo at 1.8Ghz, and a Core 2 Quad at 4Ghz, but in new games with a card like the 7600GS on max settings, you arent going to notice much of a difference.

It's really the combination of overclocking your CPU and video card that gain framerates in games.

I used to overclock my CPU but nowadays I keep getting errors when I try to overclock, mostly memory related. But my graphics card is overclocked.

It was an X1900 XT in crossfire, here's the site I mentioned...

Those benchmarks are about what you'd expect. Remember that most games aren't as CPU intensive as GPU.. When you overclock you're CPU you are improving the performance of the entire system, and somethings gain larger performance boosts than others. Gaining an extra 30fps just by overclocking your CPU is incredible in my opinion.. If you want any more OC your 7950.

Truth is you gain so much more from overclocking when doing so at the end of your chips usefulness. Imagine boosting your fps by that amount when you're only getting 15fps in Half Life 3 (or somethin).

In any case if you are holding so many doubts on your ability, or that of your hardware, to OC I suggest waiting till you are ready to begin.. spend the in between time surfing the forums, etc.

Just to comment, when I play CSS maxed out, my CPU usage doesnt even reach 80% most of the time, so if I overclocked mine to say, 4Ghz, I probably wouldnt even see a difference.
