NOT.

In the past I've been critical of the IPOD. Calling it trendy and cliquy and overpriced compared to it's competition.

Well for my birthday my girlf friend bought me an ipod shuffle. When I first got it I loved it. I held it in my hand, felt how light it was, how easy the buttons were to access and how well it fit with the arm band holder. I though, gee I was wrong about apple, they've changed.

Then I tried to use it.

After installing Itunes, I plugged the ipod in where itunes immediatly told me I needed to update it. So I updated it. After uploading some music to the ipod and playing with it, Itunes told me to update Itunes. After updating Itunes, I restarted and plugged the ipod back in. For no apparent reason, my ipod no longer mounted as a drive. Windows could see it, but not read or write to it. After 8 hours of uninstalling, reinstalling, tweaking the registry, manually starting and stopping services, and repeating on 3 different computers, I call apple. Through the broken english of their tech in India, they tell me my problem is normal and e-mail me the solution and hang up. I open the e-mail and it guidelines in vivid detail how to do everything I just did.

So being super pissed at this point, I gave up and went to bed. The next morning I woke up, went to my desktop and installed the latest itunes and the latest ipod updater (verbatum to what I did last night). I plug the ipod in and guess what? It's recognized. It tells me i need to update to the latest firmware, altho it already is running the latest firmware, so I just restore it back to factory in case the current firmware was corrupt. Since then, I tunes will recognize it and i can add music to it. However, the firmware updater will not recognize it and I have to restart the computer to safely unmount the ipod. I haven't plugged it back in to see if it will work again. I'm affraid it will lock up again.

Other then that, it works like a charm. I've taken it running a few times and it's great. Works as advertised. Just wish I could get it to work on my laptop....

So in short, yes I now own and use an Ipod, however I don't take back any trash I've talked about Ipod or any apple products in the past.

the only positive thing is that I rather like Itunes so far. It seems to be one of the better media library/player programs I've found.

My sister got an iPod shuffle for xmas, oh the crappiness, reminds me just why i bought a Creative Zen Touch 20Gb...... The feud between AMD and Intel, i can deal with that, i can grant AMD grace, they are good, im an intel man though, but MS and MAC, OMFG dont get me started on MAC, they drive me crazy.

strange. I got itunes back when pepsi had that thing where you could win free songs and i've used it ever since. I also have an Ipod shuffle and i have no problems with that except it would be kind of nice if they had something you could plug into it to see the song name or track number. The only thing I dont like is that I almost bought a ipod nano but then I saw an article talking about the screen being so thin that it scratches to the point that you cant read a thing on it and the only thing apple is doing about it is deleting all the complaints on the reveiws part of the website.

why do they call it ipod video they dont have ipod 4th gen anymore and its pretty much the same as the 4th gen only with a color screen so why not call it 5th gen ipod?

I just got a 5G ipod video this past weekend. I also already have a 4G 20GB. For whoever said there isn't much of a difference, you couldn't be anymore wrong. New look, color screen, battery life improvement (minus when you are playing videos of course), thinner, more options (movies, music, photos, etc), and a much larger screen. I do have to say, I am amazed how sharp the screen is.

I was simply saying why not call it the ipod 5th gen I wasn't saying it was exactly the same simply that ipod 5th gen sounds better than ipod video.

i like the concept of the shuffle. I hate having a screen on it. When I'm running I don't need to see what song is playing. It just adds weight and kills the battery faster. I like the idea of plugging in the shuffle and it automaticly downloading a random playlist or allowing me to select what songs to put on it. I like being able to set it to play in order or shuffle the songs with a single switch.

In other words, for a mp3 player used for running, the concept is awesome. Only one thing would make it better....and that's making it waterproof

It's the firmware that blows goats.

Sorry, but I would have to agree with you. Having an iPod (really) is just like saying "I'm in the latest trend!" I've owned 3 and after the third one I realize "Damn, there are tons out there and I should just go buy one of those! Jeez, I'll save money and get a better product!" I've already seen 3 nanos break, about a trillion videos brake and all internally. I babied all my iPods and they still turn out like crap... Go Zen or iAUDIO and get more bang for your buck.

heaven forbid that one ipod fails and it happens to be yours. Just because you experience one failure you cannot write off a whole family of hardware. i had an athlon processor fail on me a while ago but its not as if i jump ship and switch to intel.
if ever i get any problems with anything that i've bought i completely bypass tech support because they are normally nobodies that dont have a clue and are just reading off a screen. instead i go back to the place that i bought and get a replacement

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. But when I have seen 3 (not including mine) break for the exact same reason you begin to wonder...

Also, I've had crap fail me all the time. But when it keeps happening you kinda shy away from that specific type.

Try just uninstalling iTunes and then re-installing it using the disc that came with it. DO NOT update, simply leave it as is. This is what I had to do with the Nano and it works fine, just like it should

i have a 20gb ipod, have done for a year, i have had so many problems im not even gonna bother explaining. im now gonna by myself a creative zen sleek 20gb.
i hate the iPod but iTunes is great, it is by far the best media player!!

Yes. Apple did a great job with iTunes... Favorite:D I'll stick with iTunes thats for sure

Sounds like you either had bad luck or Ipod shuffle has problems. I own the Ipod Mini 4gb and it works beautifully. I bought one for my wife and hers runs flawlessly also. We both have had other mp3 players and both would much rather own our Ipod's then anything else on the market today. I have no use however for the shuffle as It just seems strange not having a display etc. Anyhow just wanted to share on how much I love my Mini and to say that there is more of a reason to own an Ipod then just the fact it looks cool. It is because these things work great. They are super simple to use through Itunes or Winamp... Yes I said "Winamp".

Edit:

There are other ways to add music to your iPod shuffle http://ipod.hackaday.com/entry/1234000833045467/ without using Itunes, I dont use Itunes any more becuase this is quicker

Yes and since many users also use Winamp then you can use it also instead of Itunes. I wish you could use Windows Media player.

Sorry, but I would have to agree with you. Having an iPod (really) is just like saying "I'm in the latest trend!"

Wrong... Ipod's are MP3 Players plain and simple people. I did not get mine so I could be in a "trend" or look cool or any other BS. I'm 32 years old and don't remember ever trying or even wanting to fit in. I think the Ipod Mini is great. The display is large and allows me to see many songs in a playlist at once. The scroll wheel thingy is by far the most superior on any Mp3 player to date. And yes the Ipod mini looks great but most importantly it works fantastic. Some might buy it to fit in some sort of trend but please do not lump all of us into that category. Some might buy a certain computer (Alienware) or cell phone (razor) to fit into a "trend" while others just want to own a fantastic product! You see what I'm saying?
