New Gamer... any game suggestions?

Yeah... if that fan is dead It's not a big deal. It was basically free. And I really don't see anyway of knowing which side of these front panel connectors is the negative or the positive. I connected the power button with the labeled side of the plug facing up and that works. I'll do the others the same way and see if that does it.

Thanks,
-Bill

arrows on the plugs are positive (at least usually).

I got that fan working... is it wrong that even though I can't do anything with it yet, as I wait on my card and OS, I'm sitting here with my case turned on, enjoying the soothing fan noise and warm blue glow of the LED fans?

not at all ;) enjoy your accomplishments.

I'm another voter for the VALVe complete pack as it will keep you entertained for hours on end. Half-Life 2 is the most in-depth, extraordinary story I've played in a first person shooter. Add to that the genius of Portal, the complete collection of the most competetive FPS onliner, Counter-Strike and the pure fun of Team Fortress. It's a no-brainer. No I don't work for VALVe btw, wish I did.

that should totally allow you to have pretty high settings in crysis :

I've seen the knock on 'Flight Simulator X' be the low frame rates... but I was thinking my Dad might enjoy it if it's playable. Any idea if I'll get decent FPS on that title? I would hope they'd be decent. (i7-930, Asus 5870, 6GB 1600)

I don't think Hawx would be up his alley, and I don't see any flight games on PC over the past couple years?

I Have pretty much the same system and it runs Flight Sim X Sp2 no lagg/issues. The game runs even better with the REX addon upwards of 60 fps all in all its a great game with great flight realism.

I've youtubed some footage of REX ... Oh My... and you're saying that the game(?) runs even better with that add on? Oh... this is frickin' cool... Does it really take 20 hours to download, as I saw in a review?

I think I saw a trial version. Should I just be able to download that and try it for a short time? I'd try it instead of asking if I weren't waiting on my GPU in the mail. Also, are there very often Trial versions of mainstream games? Demos or whatever? Thanks for the info...

and Thx for letting me know that my card will cut it,
-Bill

Quick Question...

My last component, the GPU, is set to arrive tomorrow and I'm looking forward to finishing up the build and finally, more than 3 months since buying my first component, seeing if this thing will work and what it is capable of.

I bought a mouse tonight (Logitech MX 518, $35 with MIR :D ) and I notice there is a driver disk. Since I scavenged the keyboard from my Dad's now deceased Emachines.... will I need to track down the drivers for the keyboard before I can use it and if so... how do I track down drivers for a keyboard without the use of a keyboard?

Wish Me Luck,
-Bill

All keyboards are plug and play, you will be fine. If it comes down to it for the mouse Windows will install generic drivers automatically, then you can go online and download the proper drivers or program so you can use any additional features that mouse may have. Looks like a good mouse, been thinking of getting something along those lines myself rather then the Microsoft one I'm using now, let me know how that mouse works for you.

JL,

It's like the night before Christmas as UPS tracking shows my card as being in Ohio. I was looking at product specification pages earlier and seeing keyboards with driver discs. I figured there had to be something in the MoBo software that had to run at least the basic functions of a keyboard, but the driver discs I saw had me wondering. If I did have to get another keyboard tomorrow I wanted to do that before the card showed up so that I could be up and running as soon as possible, instead of having to spend another hour running to Bestbuy once the card had arrived.

Obviously, the Video Card will perform basic functions well enough that I can see BIOS and install WIN7 before I install the GPU driver?

I assume I'll need an anti-virus? Any suggestions?

I bought Dirt2 tonight along with the OS and Mouse. Hopefully this time tomorrow I'll be gaming on my new rig.

Thx for letting me know JL,
-Bill

It will work fine. Yep, just pop the card in, make sure your OS disc is in the drive and follow the on screen instructions. Once the OS is installed pop your mobo driver disc in so it can install the drivers for your network, sound etc. Then restart, plug in your internet and search for Windows updates, while it's doing that you can go to ATI.com and download the drivers for your card. It's going to take a while for Windows to update and get up to speed with the service packs and security upgrades. I and many others on this site use Avast Antivirus, it's free and very effective. I also use Spybot Search And Destroy and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, the three best free programs that will protect your system. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, if you run into problems tomorrow just drop a line, myself or someone else on here will be sure to help. Good luck.

Yeah, I hate waiting, that's why I just go to the local computer store. But you know what helps pass the time? Drinking! (if your old enough) And do you plan on getting Starcraft 2? If so you should add me and the others on this site to your friends list.

Believe it or not, the Dork who can't wait to play video games (no offense :P) is plenty old enough to knock back a few Steamwhistles.

It looks like Catalyst 10.7 is the current driver off of the ATI site. I'm guessing I'll want the whole Software Suite as opposed to just the display driver. Is this a massive DL? I'm wondering if I'll want to plug in the ethernet as opposed to relying on my basic router and usb adapter. The card is Asus brand... apparently it's same driver for all of the different brands?

Should this take all afternoon, or is it not to big a deal?

Oh, and on SC2... I'm not sure I'm set up to do any online gaming... maybe in a couple months when I have the house to myself and can hog the ethernet line. The router is very basic and can be slow just playing a youtube clip. I'll be home alone through the end of the year though and by then I may plug in and look to broaden my horizons with some online play. BFBC2 looks like a really fun experience as an online game so I'd like to try it out. Waiting till October will give me some time to practice.

In the mean time I have Dirt2, Medal of Honor Airborne, with Batman Arkham and Mass Effect 1 in the mail... those are enough for right now. And thank you for the invite on the SC2. ;)

Thx again JL,
-Bill

You will love Dirt2 its a great game and a great example of what dx11 can offer see if you can beat my time on Kanes Creek of 3:10.26 or 86th in the world. :P and still practicing ;)

There is a teaser trailer of Dirt 3 on gamershell.com! Looks awesome, I love every racing game made by Codemasters.

Hsv... at this point I'm just really hoping that this thing will be up and running tomorrow... that I got it put together correctly without needing to RMA. I've heard that the game is tough to play until you've gotten in quite a bit of practice.

JL... the next Dirt is in the pipeline already? No wonder I got my hardcopy for only $20. I hope more DX11 games are coming soon, BFBC2 looks unbeleivable as well.

Thanks you guys... Hope this RIG works,
-Bill

Well... this thing's Live... and it's pretty ridiculous. Yep. Quick question... once I'm in a game, how do I get back out of it? The only way I've found so far has been Control-alt-delete and a restart... there's gotta be something better.

Yep... I'm a noob...

Thx All,
-Bill
