Computer is slow...need some input

Ok so this is my bros computer and i told him I would take a look at it. Its been running real slow lately, takes almost 20 mins to start up, everything takes forever to start up ect. I installed spybot and it picked up some things but its not fixed obviously. He went haywire installing antivirus and spyware stuff so I dont know what all exactly is on here. I tried to run the house call but the computer crashed both times. Heres the HJT log.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the Scan-tab, remove the mark at Heuristic analysis.
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:

  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

    This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Please run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entries:

hi, I completed the short scan and it found some things and i chose for it to do the entire computer after I unchecked the heuristic analysis button and left my computer. I came back tonight and i had the blue screen of death. I restarted it and an am back to where I was...doing the full scan. I hope to post new info by the end of the night
 
ok both times I have gon back from the computer doing the full scan after the short scan, I've gotten the blue screen. What is the next step? I remember the first time I did it it saying it found something and I remember seeing something about a trojan. I dont know if that is any help or not, but I thought I would mention it. I just clicked "yes to all" to cure it like you said.

What now?

Good, Dr. Web appears to have removed the trojan before it crashed. Both the HijackThis and ComboFix logs look clean. How is the system running now?
 
It might be a little better. It still takes forever to start up and forever to do anything, but at least you said the trojan is gone. Should I post another HJT log?

One reason why your startup is slow b/c look at all the startup entries (O4 - HKLM\..\Run:)!! To disable un-needed startup entries go to Run and type "msconfig". Then click the Startup tab and un-check programs you dont want to startup on boot. The only needed ones are anything to do with printers, graphics, java, and accessories.

ok, im gonna ask a noob question. I went to that site to do the full scan, and it said that i needed to turn ActiveX on and enable Java Script. I have them enabled (at least Im 99% sure I did it right) but it is still saying it. I read the other pages they have linked to for troubleshooting and I still cant get it to work...any ideas?

Make sure you have the latest java and activex you will need.
 
I have the latest activex, i tried the link you left but my windows installer wouldnt installer wouldnt work for some reason. It said that it might no have been installed right. Any alternative routes?

Have you got all the latest windows updates???
 
I think so. I remember him saying something the other day about it restarting because windows was updated, but Ill look into it.
