Ethernet port doesn't work

Hello,

I have a Gigabyte Motherboard with 2 ethernet ports on it.
The first/top one doesn't work and the second does.
MB: Gigabyte EP45-DS3
Ethernet: Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabyte Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)

I have updated the drivers and it doesn't work. When I try to uninstall the drivers to reinstall them, the uninstaller gets stuck right when he starts. Also in device manager disabling or removing them freezes the task.

My ping is very high on Windows Vista. Also on a laptop with vista it is high. But on another computer with XP it's as it should be low.
All on the same modem.

Thank you,

Oekoeloe

Then it seems you have a hardware issue with them. You can try resetting the cmos to see if that will help. Also, is there a setting in the bios to disable one or both of them? If so, make sure both are enabled.

I went into the bios and both ports can detect if there is a cable connected. And both are set on enabled.
When I go onto my XP hard drive in this computer. The ping is low as it should be.
Conclusion: Vista sucks. After a update couple months ago this started.
Also, when I go on a laptop with windows 7, the ping is also as high as vista.
All the systems with XP has a good low ping.

Is there a way to find and remove that particular update that made this happen?

Thanks,

How much system memory is installed? The only thing I can recommend at this point since its been a couple months since the update is to reinstall windows and don't install any updates. Unless you installed the optional updates which would have been any drivers that windows needed to install. Have you tried going into device manager and just do a roll back of the driver to see what happens?

I tried the rollback, it also makes it freeze. I think I'm on to something before I reinstall vista. I found that eset nod32 may be causing this problem. Since I got the same once installed on the vista and win7 computers and another version/kind on XP.

Solution

I found out that Eset NOD32 enabled HTTP protection which makes the ping high.
After I disabled it, everything is back to normal.

Except for the ethernet port not working.

I have had problems in the past with on-board ethernet ports failing on motherboards. I just disable the on-board ports and install a nic.

If you need more than one port then you will need to buy a dedicated nic card and install it.
