I would have to say dirt2. I have played both, and aside from shift palying like crap because it got whored out to nvidia (all ati cards struggle, even the patch didn't do a whole lot), the gameplay is too arcade style for me. basically like every other nfs game.

Dirt 2 is less arcade style, has some form of structured tournaments, and no stupid achievements, stars and whatever that shift has.

thats my 20c.

Dirt 2 has a demo so you can try before you buy. I played the demo and loved it. I'm a little upset with myself that I didn't buy it when it was on sale on steam a few weeks ago (wasn't a huge sale just a few dollars off).

I haven't played NFS:Shift but I was definitely impressed by Dirt 2.
Dirt 2 received moderately better reviews (metacritic).

+1 to linkin
I have played both aswell, as I love Dirt2, it seems so much more realistic, also it has more replayability(new word). NFS you can beat in a few hours, Dirt 2, I still haven't beaten. But I'm not going to bash NFS because it still a fun game.

Love DiRT 2. There are many modes, lots of actual people doing voice overs and stuff. From what I can tell, it is realistic (for a game), like bending the axle and you can knock off your doors and such. I love it.

Same here. I've played Dirt 2 Demo a ton of times on my PC using the arrows and spacebar and I'd like to play the full game... < too cheap to buy the game >. It's a sweet game. The damage is very realistic - and affects the drive of the car fi you have it activated. If I ever got around to buying a Racing wheel - I'd buy both games - but it's not high on my priorities right now.

Dirt 2 Demo download

Never played NFS

You can't call Shift and DiRT2 sims. They are arcade games to give you a fun time. I've played both, shift seems to have some weird FPS issue and DiRT2 is just amazing. DiRT2 is DX11 game an looks fabolous, a lot of cars and competitions. You'll find yourself struggling at highest AI setting. Here is a little video of me in DiRT2, I am about to start a proper 10 minute video.

Looks pretty damn nice, too bad I don't have a 5770  I might sell off this 4870 to get one, even if it don't perform as good, opinions?

I'm curious

For those who do the driving game thing - how many people own Racing wheels - and how many just use the Arrows on keyboard?

I almost bought a wheel around Christmas time - but decided I didnt' want to spend the money on one. I've got my eye on a Logitech MOMO - and Thrustmaster F430 as potential future purchases - but not really sure if I'll ever get around to it.

So do all PC drivers own Racing Wheels - or do you guys just tap away at the keyboard?

Thanks

I don't really play "racing sims," mostly FPS, but they both looked pretty sweet, and thanks for the linky :good:

imo Forza and such get boring fast because the only fun out of those races in real life is the feel of the power/cornering (and it's hard to drive a car even with force feedback without feeling the car out). Rally games are very different though and if you haven't played one recently I'd give it a try, though I agree that fps are usually longer lasting and more fun.

Also, I'd go with drift 2.

I use the arrows although i have a wheel too. I'm just used to the arrows. :) In my opinion it's not really worth getting a wheel to play those games unless you want to play with a stick shift which is more fun. I do play stick shift but with buttons lol which seems funny. :D Btw i didnt buy my wheel i just received it as a gift for my birthday.

About the topic:

I do have both games and really it's a hard decision which one to pick because they both have good graphics and nice gameplay but if i really have to choose between them i would go with Need for Speed Shift because they usually have the cars that i like. :P

I have 2 wireless 360 wheels I got on craigslist for about $40 each. It actually makes the game harder with the force feeback but a hell of a lot more fun.

I am assuming he is getting it on PC (Watch it be xbox now :P) so forza sort of doesn't work there, but if it is xbox, forza beats the other 2 hands down, so much more fun.

Between the 2 posted though, DiRT. It is just more fun. NFS is ok, but it still feels all arcadey, you can't help but kick the back end out all of the time, even in the road cars that are meant to have ground effect aerodynamics. DiRT though feels more real and is so much more fun, even if you spend an entire race falling off :P

Yeah, I'm getting it on PC, don't own an Xbox and don't plan on it either. (Psst... selling 4870 for a 5770, what do y'all think? Or should I just stay as I am?)

***EDIT***
Obviously it wouldn't be much of an upgrade, but more and more DX11 games will be coming out and it's pretty much a "trade."
