WTB Video Card for 2560x1600

Title says it all, I want to buy a Video Card that performs well with 2560x1600 resolution, gaming that is.

I prefer Nvidia.

Just let me know if anyone has anything to sell, and the price they are willing to sell for.

Thanks

Suggestions: Nvidia GTX 285, GTX 295, GTX 480 or GTX470. Can spend up to $300 depending on the card.

EDIT: Also looking to buy a motherboard. Components that need to fit are AMD 965 BE CPU and OCZ 1333MHz 106666 memory. Other than that, it must be SLI compatible/ready.

I have researched both of those you mentioned (never heard of 5950 though), really like GTX 480, but my wallet is not endless unfortunately.

Was hoping to get away with an appr $300 investment.

I know 5870 should perform well enough, maybe you've gad issues due to 5850. If I am not completely wrong, that one is intended more for lower res's. I could be wrong though.

You're correct, their is no 5950, only 5970, and up coming 5990 with 4gb ram. I do not believe my card is made for lower resolutions, I have never heard of a card being recommended for specific resolutions. I think the 5870 is like an extra 15 percent faster than the 5850, which I don't think would be enough for that resolution unless over clocked.

what games are we talking here?

I have played CoD4 on high settings @ 1920x1080 on my 8600gt SLI. I know the resolution is lower, but hell, the 5850 blows the 8600 away, the 285 and 295 do too, even with the 8600gt in SLI. I don't see how they would have any problem at all

Battlefield Bad Company 2, Assassin's Creed 2, BioShck 2, and future games of course.

By future games I am referring to Diablo 3, Elder Scrolls 5 and Call of Duty Black Ops mainly.

I wish I had 2 PCI-Express 16 2.0 slots on my mobo (currently have Gigabyte MA770T).
So I might be interested in a decent Mobo as well, 2 graphic Card slots is a req then.

Most Call of Duty games are easy plays. I know my graphics card could handle Modern Warfare 2 on 1920x1200 at max settings (No AA) but for gaming like Bad Company 2 I would be guessing it's a lot larger scale, and more gpu intensive.

I am using an 896mg GTX 260 Core 216 and I tell ya not enough, especially not with Bad Company 2. Hence the need for better card.

And i like playing in 3D, there it really lacks the power. That is also why I prefer nVidia

I would try and find a gtx295, they go for a little over $300 these days. A GTX470 isn't quite strong enough for what you want, and neither is any single GPU gtx200 series.

You could try and find another gtx260 and SLI them. Even if your motherboard doesn't support SLI, there's software hacks for it to work.

A gtx285 isn't that much stronger than a 260 I've found, not nearly enough to warrant an upgrade to one. I've owned both, and also a gtx275.

Have you tried overclocking the card to help somewhat?

Yep, my card is overclocked already, still not strong enough. As for the mobo, I don't have enough PCI Express slots, only have one.

Someone must be willing to sell me a card...

Thanks for the advice though, very helpful.

BC2 is enough for me with GTX 260s.

Yeah umm dude he's running more than double the resolution you are. You can play any game at 1680x1050 resolution on a single gtx260, not sure why you bother with SLI. He's running 2560x1600 resolution.

Karder, I've actually been thinking about it more and you may be OK with a gtx470. I ran a 5830 with eyefinity at 5670x1080 resolution playing COD WAW at 50-65 FPS. Now, granted I had no AA or AF on, but the 470 is even stronger than a 5850, AND 2560x1600 is literally HALF the pixels of 5760x1080. So I'm thinking gtx470 if you cannot find a gtx295 reasonably.

That said, there's a guy on another forum I'm on thats selling a 295 for $330 shipped. But I would honestly go with a 470 so it's new, and a warranty that you can put in your name. Another tip, buy an EVGA, so just in case for some strange reason it isn't everything you wanted, you can use their step up program down the road and get a gtx480.

That sounds very reasonable. I did actually look at those as well, but since they are fairly new, I suspected the drivers wouldn't be the best at the moment.

But I have been looking at 470 and 480. Might "re" look at them now and see if I find a good deal.

Gracias for the advice.

Also, I was thinking to future proof my setup from the core, meaning MOBO. Was thinking about this Mobo, so I can SLI in the future.

Looks decent?

btw, I have decided to go with nvidia, 3d is just too good to let go of.

Why do you people determine how great your card is by running WAW? That game isn't as intense nor demanding as so many. If you really want to brag about your card go run ARMA II on max graphics with that resolution with full scale distance on.

No the 750a chipset is not very good. I know this is pricy, but it would be worth it-

The 980a blows the 750a away. Newegg has an Asus 980a for $140 but it's not nearly as good as this MSI is. The Asus only has a 4 pin CPU power connector, which greatly increases Vdroop if you are running a quad (or even worse the new 6 core). The MSI even has 3 x16 slots, and supports 3 way SLI for even more future upgradeability.

I was just giving my personal experiences man, so chill. It was only a 5830 not a 5850, with TWICE as many pixels (5760x1080 VS 2560x1600), so I'm fairly confident that a 5850 (and it's Nvidia equivalent the gtx470) would be able to play much more intense games at plenty acceptable frame rates at 2560x1600 even with AA and AF on.
