It is PCI-E x16. I doubt a PCI-E 2.0 card will run on it, but I may be wrong as I don't pay attention to vid cards.
A PCI Express 2.0 card will run just fine in an x16 slot, it will just run at reduced speed a bit like a PCI Express 3.0 card running in a PCI Express 2.0 slot will run at reduced speed. Both the 8800 and 9600 would run fine on that board, I ran a 9600 GSO on a PCI Express x16 slot just fine. :)

Not getting an gpu from that seller, no description, no feedback. Will look at the 8800's though. Got the case combo! Now I realize why they call them super ATX, the things a behemoth, trouble getting it to fit on my desk.

Does the case look as good as it did in the pics?
It looks big enough that you won't have any air flow problems.
I would have snagged it if it was close to me at that price.

There are lots of 8800s and 9800s on eBay and I'm sure Craigslist too, just keep you eyes peeled. The 9800s are also decent cards by the way if you're wondering.

Blimey searching for 8800s and 9800s on eBay has brought some memories back. I wasn't very old when the 8800s and 9800s came out, but I do remember them...

Prob a 660 or 650ti or 570.
Don't upgrade to something like those - your Core 2 Duo will be holding it back, ie - "bottlenecking" it, meaning that the GPU won't perform to its full potential because the CPU will be limiting its performance. I'd say the best graphics card you want to pair with an old low-end Core 2 Duo would be something like a GTS 450 or maybe a GTX 550 Ti, certainly nothing more powerful than that.

If you are going to upgrade to a GTX 570 or one of the new Kepler cards, at least upgrade the CPU too. The Core 2 Quads should be OK with a 570, you'd probably want a Q9xxx CPU as they were the later ones, they should be compatible with your board.

Yes in order to fully utilize the performance of a GTX 570 you'd definitely need to upgrade your board and CPU. A GTX 570 is waaayy overkill for Minecraft ;) I'd just stick with the C2D and the 680i board you've got and then just buy a GTS 450 or a GTX 550 Ti or the low/mid-range NVIDIA or AMD card available at the time.

I'll be playing more than minecraft, my game collection is pretty small (6 games) which include demanding 3D games, by the time the 660 is here, I will have a bigger game collection.
