Hi I just recently purchased a second hand pc for my wife from ebay and connected and switched on and everything went ok for like a couple of months.

However, today when I went to switch on and after a while it said 'invalid boot diskette' and asking for something in the A:

It was Windows XP Pro and I didn't get any disks or anything with it but they said it was valid and it had a licence number on the side.

Please help.

its just a suggestion.
i would think there is no disk in a:drive.
i would go into the bios after starting and disable the boot process for a drive.
turn it off and boot directly to the primary. then report back.

is there a floppy drive disk in it or any other media in the computer. I once left a floppy drive in the pc and when i restarted it said the same thing.

mkae sure nothing is in the floppy or the CD Drive and make sure the boot process ahs the hard drive first!

Ehm, have the CD/DVD reader first and then harddrive. You can remove floppy from the boot order because I think you never need to boot with a floppy.

So in the event he has to boot to a CD he can and doesn't have to change BIOS later.

Exactly! Also make sure you dont have a flash drive or similar plugged in. If none of these things work then you are prob looking at a bad hdd or a corrupt boot file that got messed up from a virus.

well if you were to do that and you had something in the CD drive then it will not work and how often do you want to boot off your CD drive???

cohen do u know what u are talkin about.. if u have a non bootable disc in the drive it will just go from there to booting from the hdd, and if its a bootable disc then he will have the option to boot from disc or hdd..

but as far as this guys problem could possibly mean a bad hard drive

well yes i do just front experiences when i CD in the drive it didn't boot and i couldn't figure out why - and then i found it was a disc in the drive causing the problem.

But anyway i suppose it is up to your guys and / or the OP

It could be like you said:eek:

How often you have a bootable cd in? And if you have it will say. Press any button to start cd.

when you have that boot order:
1. when it displays press any key do boot from cd....
you must take out the cd and restart :) bad ...
2. every time you start the OS , it will search the cd/dvd drive (it takes time)
It slows down the OS and some times when you have a cd with autorun it may couse problems!

To the problem!
Every problem that can't be solve under Windows can be removed!
REINSTALL WINDOWS !!!

you must take out the cd and restart bad

how is that, it would just prompt u with hit ne key to boot from cd, in that case dont hit a key if u dont wanna boot.. 2nd my comp is set to boot from both my dvd burner and dvd drive before my hdd, my xp/ubuntu boots up like 1-2 seconds slower now..

when I went to switch on and after a while it said 'invalid boot diskette

that im almost positive is a hdd problem.. i doubt pepsi girls lets reinstall windows cuz ur gettin that error is gunna work..
