Hi all, i seriously need help!!! I turned on my laptop this morning and all i can see is - windosw was unable to start as the following file is missing or corrupt - <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. reinstall a copy of this file.

Does anyone have any ideas (bare in mind my laptop does not have a floppy drive)

Many thanks

Boot from your Windows XP CD and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Then at the c:\> prompt type the following:

Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot
type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer

If this doens't work again boot from your CD and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Then at the prompt type the following:

"expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll"

"d:\i386\hal.dl_ " in the above command should be altered to to reflect the location of the CD,DVD drive which contains the Windows CD

type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer
