Windows re-installation vs. Virus Removal

A friend took her PC to the Geek Sq. and was told that Windows needed to be re-installed and would cost whatever they charge. Then she said she'll think about it and gave me a call, I scanned and cleaned it using Malwarebytes and Avast and now its clean. Since there wasn't much data in it, it took 2 hrs. for all. Why did they recommend a re-installation of the OS? Why not just do what I did? Did I do anything wrong?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

probably for the fact they cant Guarantee that it is Virus spyware malware etc free when they get done and they probably get paid more for doing it that way or in some cases its not worth removing the viruses?!?

They take advantage of people who aren't knowledgeable in the field of computers and recommend them services often (almost always) are unnecessary; they make more money when they add on services that you don't really need to do and since the average customer doesn't know any better they agree.

LoL I hate Geek squad. They will ALWAYS say that the reason is either a VIRUS or that OS needs to be reinstalled. They always do that so that they get more money.

MONEY + MONEY + MONEY = GEEK'S CRAPY UNNECCESSARY SERVICES

LoL I should delete my "hal.dll" file on purpose and pretend I dont know ANYTHING about computers and then ask the Geek squad what to do.I bet they will say that the OS needs to be reinstalled and that they will ask a lot of money for it xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD

LoL cheers!

My friend you have done the right thing. Geek sq. sucks bad. Never take your computer to them. Most viruses can be deleted easily as long as they are not in the Registry.
I had a friend wanting to clean inside her computer and called Geek sq. and asked how much it would cost. They said just to look into the laptop would cost 70 Dollars.
THis was insane, so I was like let me see it and I took care of it in less than 5 minutes. DId not cost her a penny and on top of that took less then 5 minute.

Your better of reinstalling windows your self. Geek Squad is useless and is way over priced. And I recommend a full reinstall of windows, Once windows gets a virus its hard to remove, plus you may think its gone and it may not be and problems could happen all over again.

I totally agree on reinstalling windows yourself as I wouldn't trust anything to best buy/geek squad. However, your recommendation of a full reinstall of windows without proof that the user has something that is hard to remove is absolutely wrong. The only thing that you really can't remove is the Virut infection.

This is the most insane virus i have ever heard about, if it goes viral computers are doomed.
