Wide screen vs. Standard ?

Many people are warning me against buying a wide screen LCD monitor because they say it makes all the screen images, documents and web pages stretch out of perspective. Is this true? How is it on games?

If wide screen does stretch everything, then why are people buying them?

Whoever told you that is out of their mind, wide screen offers a better aspect ration, nothing get stretched out, everything is displayed the way it's meant to be, it is stretched on a standard monitor.

It was my brother who told me that......come to think of it, he is out of his mind!!!

Widescreen monitors do stretch certain images, such as almost all digital photographs and some games. Most games do support wide screen resolutions, however there are some that dont.

Widescreen monitors are definitely becoming more of the standard, with fewer and fewer "standard" monitors.

as one of the responses above mentioned, could SOME of your stretching be due to a resolution setting?

Resolution is part of the issue, since it's a 16:9 or 16:10 resolution vs 4:3. If you wanted undistorted images and such, you would have black bars on the side of the monitor.

I just recently went to a widescreen format, It took me a couple of days to get used to it, but now when I have to work on my wifes system (she still has the narrow aspect screen) It drives me crazy.

I was like you, uncertain about making the change over. But I am very happy I did.

I have been running on my Hanns-G widescreen monitor for like 6 months now, and i have to say it is amazing. The image will only stretch out until you set up the resolution. Mine runs at 1440x900 or something like that. My 7600GT has an option to set your monitor to any resolution you want so i just put the digits in and there you go. I dont know if you could do that without a graphics card...

Anyways, if you're going to be gaming, nowadays most games have widescreen capability so dont worry about games. Some old games though will stretch but is no big deal, i play warcraft 3 stretched out but you get used to it and now i feel weird when i play warcraft 3 on a standard display.

overall: no, images DO NOT always distort

hope that helped

I personaly think the widescreens are great, I havn't ever noticed anything being streched, and I do alot of graphic design and ect.

I seriously think that 22" Widescreen LCD monitors are quickly becoming the standard if they aren't now.

Kent.

Most people just really aren't too bright. A lot of times when I'm at someone's house, they've got their wide HDTV stretching out a picture from a normal broadcast because they don't know how to fix the ratio for when they aren't watching HDTV. Some don't even realize that their picture is stretched.

I wouldn't find it hard to believe at all that people are unable to adjust their resolution from 1024x768 or something and therefore end up with everything stretched.

But no, widescreen monitors run at 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, and things like that.

For games that don't support widescreen, it can usually be forced. I only had a problem with Battlefield 2, but that can be fixed by changing the properties of the shortcut icon.
