hi. I am going to get a laptop. I have 1000 $ and I want to choose well. I will need it at the unviersity as I am passing this year. I will maybe sometimes play some games too. What would you advise? I thought about hp probook 4510s or 4710s. What would you say about that? :)

Okay, what kind of games? Though you can get a gaming laptop a good one worth its money will cost more than what your budget is.

If you want to PC game then stick to your desktop or go console.

* Also, tell us what you will need it for/want it for -- besides gaming.

I am passing to political science and international relations + business administration so I will need a laptop at the university. I'll have to do some projects, write emails and etc. Well, for office work. But it's not essential to be a gaming laptop because I might just install wow and sims or something like that so that I can play it when I have free time. (that will be maximum 4 times a month :D )

Do you have your eyes on anything in particular? Can you link us to some models that catch your eye or are we starting from scratch?

I've thought about getting one of these:

but a site of one shop says that each of these have 500 gb HDD and these reviews say that they have 250 and 320. Why is that?? I would very much like to get a laptop which has 500 HDD because I want to download and watch lots of films...

Those links are to July 2009 and believe it or not you will have to do some searching to find new laptops with Vista. Everything has shifted to Windows 7 both 32-bit and 64-bit OS (many come standard with 7 64 bit), DDR3 memory, etc.

I suggest going to sites such as HP, Lenovo, Dell, etc. and check out their many offerings. Compare and contrast. With a $1,000 you'll do nicely.

Also, once you find a model or two or three that you like research on it. Keep us updated and if you find something nice link us to it.

If it were up too me, i work in a computer store, the two best laptops are gateway and asus. Hp i do not recommend considering i see them come in way too often for various problems such as screen problems. My strongest recommendation is a asus though. Hope i was of help, if you have any questions just ask me them.

Look people, there are such things as gaming laptops, now there are gateways, asus and if i recall alien ware made some. Now out of all the laptops you can get a good one that is for school and also good for gaming from asus, but you will have to make your buget go up by 200-500$ more. If you wanna know if the laptop can run a certain game, go on the laptop and go to http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/

We're well aware that there are gaming laptops for considerably more $ which is why we have been suggesting that with his budget a laptop for school work, projects, emails, internet etc. should be his concentration. Even lower end games will be able to play on a $1000 machine but not to make the ability to game a criteria.

If you want to game then use a PC or console unless he is willing to jump his budget.

The ASUS G51JX-X3 is the one i would strongly recommend out of those 3. The toshiba's come in too often at my work. Lenovo i have never seen one in for repair i think but its not as well known of a brand as asus and also asus is the company that makes the best motherboard suited for gamers. Hope we were all of use.

Lenovo not a well known brand?????
They bought the IBM thinkpad and that's now the Lenovo laptop division...
However, in terms of quality, Asus and Toshiba would be better.

sorry daisy but in canada not many are here, stores like futureshop and bestbuy dont even sell them so hence the reason why i dont know about them that much. And yes the asus is a good choice.

I would go with the asus, but dells are not that bad. But a problem is if a component breaks you are not really able to fix it your self since dell is all propriatary
