Which harddisk is the best?

i have never had any problem with Western Digital and Seagate disks. i have only ever used them two so i cant comment on others.

Those are two well established brand names to begin with. Unfortunately a good rep for Maxtor another old brand name lacks from too many complaints having been heard over the years. But even when going with what you would expect to be one of the top brands you can still run into a bad drive at some point. How well a system is maintained will often determine how long any drive will last.

From what i have heard the best drive that you can get is the Western Digital VelociRaptor. But that it just what i think. Any other opinions on this drive.

western digital is usually the best brand, however you might also want to check out other features

look at the RPM to make sure it is good enough. 7200 is standard for desktops

look at the cache. More is better, 16 is standard but 32 is becoming more popular

also look at ide vs SATA. Ensure you are getting one that matches your computer. If you have both, go with SATA as it is faster

I use dual velociraptors..well..I did..lol

But, next build will have multiple ones again.

I really don't like single large capacity drives...much prefer multiple 300GB's at 10000rpm..32mb cache,,etc

but..it is expensive solution..no question!

The reason for running single or multiple larger capacity drives depends on just how much drive space you actually need. Another factor is how OSs will be run. When running one drive some may choose to create a second storage/backup partition where the additional drive space is put to use.

Brandwise I've been running WD drives for a good number of years without one fail while in use on any build I run. The one old smaller size drive I loan out gets cooked simply due to someone not bothering to clean the dust buildup out a case at all! Try pulling a blanket of dust off the board for a start!
