What processor for gaming?

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to computers, so I'm asking you guys to help. I'm wanting to build a medium/high-end gaming rig. I've never built a computer before, but wouldn't mind trying out overclocking. I don't have any parts so no compatibility problems. Price-wise, cheaper is always better, but I really don't want to skimp on quality, so think about 600 USD or under. I also want to get a fairly recent one so that I can be able to upgrade chips without having to get a whole new mobo.

My question is thus: With the above guidelines in mind, what would you suggest for a good gaming computer?

pretty much all you can do with that amount of money is amd. You can get a nice amd ran computer for that much without skimping to much

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but I meant ~600 for the processor only. That opens up a much wider range :) Which makes it all the more confusing for me, but that's what you guys are for, right? :P

How much are you looking to spend on the whole computer for $300 you can get an i7 920 which is just about the best CPU out right now until the i9 comes out.

@daisymtc: The only difference between the 950 and the 920 is the speed, and I'll (hopefully) be able to OC it, so I didn't think that was a good deal. Fatback just cemented it in. Besides, 300 dollars for .4 GHz? I could get another 920 for that money.

When does the i9 come out? Does anyone know what socket it'll be for?

Um, total budget is about 1,200, but just because there is that much doesn't mean it all has to get spent. I don't need every little thing. If I did I'd save up some more and get the 975

You asked for a CPU for $600 or less.

No offense, but if you're this well informed, then why do you need
to ask for opinions?

Something like this... Others will probably be able to improve/do better

CPU, Mobo, Ram + free toy lol

Graphics Card

CPU HSF

Hard Drive

Power Supply

Plus a case for around $90ish (plenty to chose from)
And a cheapo DVD Drive.....

Plenty of upgrade potential in that.

I would get this 4890 instead better quality and cooling http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150359

This is one of my all time favorite case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811103011 the cooling is amazing

I chose the powercolor one cause its factory overclocked.

It has some heating issues I have used one before in a customer build it idled around 57C in a cooler master cosmos. Besides it's so easy to overclock it you really don't have to do anything but hit a button and catalyst control center will do it for you.

You said "gaming computer"... so, just spend +/- $300 on the CPU, either AMD Phenom II X4 or Intel i7, and spend whatever is left on the graphics card.
As someone else mentioned - if you want the BEST, go ahead and get the GTX 295... For gaming purposes, using the same graphics card (a GTX295 for example), you won't see hardly any difference, if any, between a $300 CPU and a $600 one.
It's all about the graphics card.

i don't know much about i9 atm, but i heard that i5 and i3 are going to be sold around autumn... not sure yet but i heard that i5 can support dual DDR4...
