Im currently buying a new pc but im not sure what operating software to use. I will be doing some gaming. I am running xp on this system im using at the moment and it works fine. Ive been told vista is buggy but ive also been told you need vista for the games that come out in the future. My choices will either be xp home or vista basic maybe vista premium. Can you help me decide what one to choose ?

Personally, if forced to use Windows, XP is the lesser of two evils. As far as Windows goes, it's stable and time-tested as something that will yield consistent results (good or bad...).

Also, you'll probably get more out of XP Home than you will from Vista Basic. Basic is...well, very basic. If you like eye-candy you will need Home Premium or above. XP just makes sense, IMHO.

Yeah, just use the XP that you have right now. That is fine for now. However, whenever you see the need to change to Vista, choose at least Vista Home Premium because Home Basic is really plain.

What good timing for this thread! If you have seen a different thread Intelcrazy and I have been "discussing" this topic.

I would pick XP over Vista, at least until SP2 comes out for Vista.

DX10 is proving to not be that big of a deal right now, maybe later it will be, but for now, it is not worth upgrading to Vista for DX10.

XP is an older OS that has driver support out the wazzu. So you should not have any problems installing any of your hardware or software with XP.

Plus it has been proven that XP runs games faster than Vista does, mostly due to the lack of driver support, or just plain bad drivers for Vista.

They are both good. I have both installed on my computer and I use vista as the interface is nicer. There are some anoying things about vista though but these will get fixed as time goes by such as compatability issues (there are not many). Vista is more future proof.

Take a look at this article that was created back in February: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2096947,00.asp

Back then the difference wasn't even that much, and drivers for Vista have become a lot more stable and finalized so the difference is even less, and potentially even shows a gain with Vista.

Yeah I have seen that link recently. But xp still wins with gaming.

And yes the drivers are getting "better" for vista, but they still are not where they should be. Maybe by the time SP2 comes out for Vista, it will be worth buying.

Vista !

Updated
SP1 is coming out soon
Most new games will only run on Vista
its just better
