Will, I'm now down to choosing the last item, which is the UPS. Since I'm building a new computer I figure that I should be more concerned about the incoming power. The electricity where I live at is very unstable. Often I see the lights flickering and from time to time the electricity goes out (without a storm outside). It usually lasts for only 30 seconds but when this happens, it’s always when I’m doing something important (like video editing or backing files to tape)
I've been looking on the Internet to try to understand UPS's a little better, but I'm still confused. Some sites say that a high AV/Wattage number will equal a longer runtime. And other sites say that the weight of the batteries will equal a longer runtime. If the electricity goes out, I want to be able to power my computer, a NEC CRT 21” monitor, my modem, and the network router for at lest 10 minutes. I went to APC UPS selector and it recommends the 750VA/450W(20 Lb. batteries), but I wanted to go with the Tripp Lite SMART 1000LCD(6 Lb. batteries) or the Ultra 1000VA(20Lb. batteries)
