Thermal Shutdown

I didn't exactly know where to put this, but...

I need some info on thermal shutdown. I have an Athlon computer and my OS is Windows XP. Ever since I got the computer I noticed it had thermal shutdown way too early. However, it's been getting worse. I can no longer run programs like Photoshop (which I NEED because I work as an illustrator) since the thermal shutdown auto shutdowns my computer at a mere 45 - 50 degrees celsius. I heard the normal was 70c+

Is there ANY way to disable thermal shutdown?

Thank you in advance. /Devi

There should be a setting in the BIOS to disable thermal throttling, or at least change the shutdown temperature.

Hmm. It sounds like a faulty sensor. Eventually the thing won't turn on at all. I had a Dell here the other day doing exactly the same thing.

I had someone go into the BIOS for me and adjust the thermal throttling, and while it's a TAD better (I can run Photoshop for 20 minutes instead of 5), it still shuts down after being on 50 degrees for a while

What program are you using to get those temps? Have you tried viewing the temps of different programs to compare numbers? Also, what does BIOS give as the temp? Viewing in BIOS gives a bit more accurate number as the CPU is running at 100% speed and not throttled back. If BIOS and multiple Temp programs are all giving (about) the same ratings, then I'm with SK on this one - it sounds like a faulty sensor. How old is the MoBo and CPU?

I have a thermostat on the chassi that shows the temperature digitally. right now it displays 47.7c. I was in the BIOS just a moment ago and it displayed the exact same temperature

The mobo and CPU are about 4 months old

Hmm...high for a newer CPU at idle. Provided the thermal paste and HSF were applied/installed the right way, it still looks like a bad sensor.

Have you tried any Temp monitoring software like SpeedFan, PC Wizard, Core Temp, or Everest?

also try hwmonitor in addition to that
