Yes I meant illegally
And yes, independent artists, or ones on their own labels, make a hell of a lot more than those on major record labels. Those that take everything get a few $ per album, those with the major record corporations get a few cents per album.

at 10:41 the interviewer asks Technique why he hasn't taken up the offers from the record labels and he explains exactly the money and treatment that he would get, and how it is better without being linked to the corporate media labels

What you are doing in downloading Ubuntu, even though it may not be distributed by Cononical any more, it is still legal because it is freeware and the contract states so long as neither they or yourself are making profit directly from their OS, you can do with it what you will.

So far as I am aware, over here they can't do you for downloading anything, because any "evidence" they have is obtained illegally because it would have been invasion of privacy to screen what you are downloading. That is what the law that they tried to pass a few months back was for, that didn't get passed because there were so many loopholes and because it was such a great invasion of privacy.
There are certain things that they can have you for though, for instance, I sometimes watch live Rugby streaming online. We have a TV licence, we have cable TV with the sports channels, it is just if someone else is watching something, so from me personally, it is all above board. For the streamer though, one of the people that used to stream got blacklisted by Virgin, so they can't have Virgin TV or broadband now because they were abusing the service and breaking the TOS.
I think sometimes, it may be acceptable to use torrents, even for what would be labelled illegal usage. Most game companies don't produce demo's any more, so you have to take a gamble for what you think a game would be like. To download a game, play it, not necessarily the full game, to get an idea, and if you enjoy it, buy it, if not, don't, that to me is acceptable, but to the industry and the judicial system, it isn't. What I think a lot of people with that mindset don't understand though is that all the time their torrent program is up, they are uploading to people who may be out there just to save money by not buying the game at all. To make that acceptable to my morals, you can't upload anything to anyone else, you have to be a leecher
