Svcd

I'm trying to make a Super Video CD using Nero and hit a snag.

When I add the video clip (AVI) Nero says over the amount of space on the CD is being used (700MB) when I know for a fact that the file is 348MB, what's going on?

Thanks,
John

It's saying the size of the SVCD will be over the limit when it's created. I assume you're creating a disk from a very good compression file (divx perhaps?). Making a SVCD requires a less-good compression, namely MPEG-2 with a variable bitrate of up to 2.6Mb/s, which takes it over the limit of the disk (only just by the looks of it).

I don't think wouldn't make any difference, since it's not the file size going into Nero that's the problem, it's what Nero does with it before burning that's the issue here, and I think Nero would insist in reencoding the video to the SVCD standard (although I'm not sure).

Why don't you burn the video as a VCD, rather than a SVCD. It should fit then.

Well, the video is an hour and I know I've burnt SVCD with hour videos on them before (I don't remember encoding details or anything though). It would fit on the VCD but the VCD didn't play in my DVD Player, the SVCD did... Does that make sense?

Yes it makes sense, some DVD Players are picky. Ok, well Nero is asking whether you want to reduce the quality to make it fit, so why don't you do that? I mean the video is only slightly over the 700MB limit, so the reduction in quality isn't going to harm.
