Starter Vs Home Premium

I want to run Windows 7 on 512mb Ram, I am not willing to update it currently, since it was a free pc, there is no point. It is a Pentium 4 which is not HT and it currently runs XP like a dream, but I do want to upgrade the OS on it. I have tried running 7 Pro on this much RAM before and it was as slow as hell. I have noticed that a lot of machines like my netbook come with Starter preloaded while Notebooks come with Home Premium. I know that Netbooks have a lot lower spec than Notebooks, and this makes me wonder whether Starter runs better on LowSpec machines than higher versions like Home Premium and Professional.

So basically I want to know: Will Windows 7 Starter run faster on 512mb ram than 7 HP or Pro. I dont want anyone saying get more ram either because I am not going to :p
 
Even 7 starter will have some issues running on 512mb. And thats the whole reason why they use starter when ram installed is only 1gb like on netbooks. You will need 3-4 gb of memory to run home premium. But my advice would be to stay with XP.
 
Whether Starter, Home Premium, Pro, Ultimate, etc... it's all the same OS. The different versions have different feature sets but the performance between them will be similar. If you found that Pro ran slow with 512M RAM then Starter will too.

Starter will run a somewhat better on 512mb as starter doesn't include aero graphics.

But again, 512mb isn't enough to really run starter version. If the OP isn't gonna get more memory, then XP would be the best bet but still won't be the best without upgrading to at least 1gb of memory.
 
Removal of Aero actually degrades performance, Aero isn't included in Starter because netbooks, in general, lack the video hardware required to support it. Has nothing to do with memory requirements.
