Slim Computers Pros and Cons

I know HP and Dell offer Slim desktops, but what are pros and cons to having a slim desktop compared to standard desktop?

I want to apologize for asking first and not using the search engine. If you folks here could help me out I would really appreciate it.

I am thinking about buying this as a gift for someone.

Any coupons or deals please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Anthony

Pros: Less space, look cute, possible conversation starter(?), probably better with airflow since less internal space

Cons: not sure

Welcome to the Forum :)

Pros: More room. Looks cool.

Cons: Expensive, cooling stinks.

Other thoughts: Good if you need a small case... But horrible for large parts like 8800's and lots of heat...

Pro's- Very cool, quickly movable, less space needed.
Con's- No room for change (like another certain video card and extra drives such as cd) from the ones I've seen.

Building on what others have said, the pros of a slim computer is that it takes up less space. However the cons are that most only have one or two PCI slots, and require the half-height cards, which aren't too common.

So in short, I would recommend one if you don't plan to upgrade anything other then the memory, hard drive, or possibly processor, and if you are tight on space. However if you want to game and add a video card or multiple hard drives, then a slim computer isn't for you.

Bad cooling/airflow? Really? I would think that it's a more direct route out the case. Small interior = less dead zones and hot air pulled out quicker. This might make a nice little comparison if someone has the means to do so :)

That is true, and generally they use low-power components, however the size of the fans and heatsinks are restricted due to the smaller case.

The crappy mini power supply has to work harder and generates more heat. Bigger fans and heatsinks aren't options. Everything is cramped. Saying a mini-desktop might be better at cooling is like saying a laptop might be better at cooling. Speaking of laptops, a mini desktop is basically all of the downfalls of a laptop, without the convenience. A novelty item. A pure waste of money.

Basically the ONLY pro is the size, and there are a boatload of cons. If you're REALLY concerned with size, go for it, otherwise there is no need to.

Thank you for the info members!

The computer system will be for school use and I believe there are no intentions of gaming.

Since a lot of you mention cooling as one of the major flaws for a slim unit; should I go with an AMD or Intel version?

HP or DELL does it matter (build quality)?

I am leaning towards the DELL because they are offering a 19" widescreen monitor with the unit @ $499.99

Oh and THANKS AGAIN!!!

thats exactly how dell gets you. when i thought prebuilt units couldnt get any worse (experiences with a few hp's and acer laptops) then i saw a dell... lol its a nightmare, that company.

but the HP's, however bad, are still better then DELLS, just make sure you dont buy anything with the word 'celeron' on it...
