Im getting a new monitor for christmas, and i hear crt is still good.
Space is NO PROBLEM FOR ME WHAT SO EVER.
This is for games and surfing the web. What should i get?
Thanks to all those who reply.

CRTs tend to look better at lower resolutions(particually when compared to LCDs) and can handle higher resolutions. LCDs get blurry at any resolution besides their native/max resolution.

CRT's can be harder on your eyes(Hz) A higher Hz setting can help, but your max Hz setting might be limited by your resolution. LCD's do not use Hz.

LCDs are prone to have dead pixles.

CRTs put off much more heat.

Eh...there are a few reasons. Personally, I'm sticking with LCDs just because they are easier on my eyes. I did watch someone game on a CRT recently, and it looked quite good. I hear CRTs are better for imaging and what not, but I'm still very happy with my LCD.

the newest NEC 17" monitors look better than any crt i have ever seen. the image quality is striking, resolution is 1280/1024 (great gaming res) and the opti-clear covering is glossy and clear, not flat like most other monitors

I do feel that there are some brilliant LCD's on sale, and without trying to repeat all the good points The_Other_One raised, the biggest gripe with CRT's for me is the refresh rate, which does put more strain on my eyes compared to an LCD.

I would say LCD.

It depends on how far you want to go-my CRT is 21", 500$, and looks better then any LCD i've seen. It can go up to 2048 x 1536 with a refresh rate of 75hz, but I keep it @ 1600 x 1200 with an RR of 85. And it looks great. Colors are sharp and vibrant, no eye strain whatsoever. The only problem is the weight (well over 70lbs) and the depth (almost a foot and a half) but I have a huge desk and won't be moving it. So it is perfect for me.

It put more strain in your eyes at refresh rate of 60HZ. But at 85Hz or higher the picture in CRT will be solid like the LCD

I beg to differ... I have heard as long as you're above 72Hz or 75Hz, you should be fine. However, I still had problems with my eyes until I stopped using my old CRT... And yes, I had it running at 85Hz.

Though even LCD's have their drawbacks. I beleive mine's so bright, it begins to hurt my eyes after a while.

Actually my eyes hurt when trying to read on LCD screens or on any screen type on sites with non-white backgrounds and a high contrasting & bright colour for the font.

500:1 is ok. It depends on how bright the LCD is as well. You'll want more contrast for brighter monitors.

I just asked the question because I want to see how people think about contrast ratio of 500:1.

But you are telling me that 500:1 is ok !!!! , My university have an LCD with a contrast ratio of 500:1, and I think it is horrible because the dark colors don't appear dark. The pictures in my CRT appear much much more realistic than the LCD in my university.

I want to ask if I want to get an LCD that can show dark colors and good quality pictures, then what contrast ratio should the LCD have ?

Also the brightness of the LCD in what unit they are measured ?, I mean how can I now if this LCD have a good brightness or not

CRTs have much finer dot pitch than flat panels unless you get a cheap one.

CRTs can have refresh rates up to 200Hz so you won't notice the flicker and they'll be much easier on the eyes. The 21" I have for sale has a .22 DP and a 120Hz refresh at 1024x768.

500:1 for a contrast ratio is actually bottom of the barrel for TFTs. 800:1 or better is reasonable.

TFTs do use refresh rates, just like CRTs do. However, on TFTs it's more commonly known as the Pixel Response Time.

CRTs are better for graphic arts than TFTs.

Both are good for gaming, but you need a high response time on a TFT in order to avoid tearing and ghosting.

Avoid a cheap, noname TFT like the plague. You get what you pay for and there are no shortcuts. Proscan, Hanns-G, Sceptre and similar are crap to avoid. The top 3 are Viewsonic, Samsung and LG.

All LCDs have trouble with dark colours. My dad has an LCD TV that has a stupidly low contrast yet incredibly high brightness. If the show/movie you're watching has a dark scene forget trying to see it.

The brightness will be # cd/m². You can find some 700:1 LCDs but that's stil nowhere near the contrast of a CRT or plasma screen.

LCD
theyre superior and not as costly as they used to be. definitely more practical if you work in a well lighted area, since there's barely any glare.
