Rebuilding after Lightning

So I just want to start this as a project. The desktop is a custom rig (but older) that got fried by lightning a couple months ago. I am interested in rebuilding it. I don't know a bunch about computers though. So I want this little project to be how I learn. The whole thing is free. So I am just looking for some advice here. Maybe a little discussion.

Is it possible to rebuild after lightning? From what I have read it is possible assuming it didn't fry everything. In which case I should be able to at least salvage the case right? So does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Where I should start? I assume the power supply is my first stop. Should I just attempt to follow that chain into the different parts?
 
I don't think I would trust anything after getting hit by lightning even if it still works. Not sure what your budget is but I would seriously think about getting all new parts. Usually with lightning strikes, it kills the mobo, power supply, ram, possibly hard drive.

If you can give us a list of what parts it had we should be able to help you.

I haven't picked it up yet so I am not really sure. Is there a reason to not trust it? Just that the parts would be fried by the electricity? I am still learning about computers.
 
Just meaning I don't know how well I would trust it now even if only say the motherboard was bad. Once you know the specs get back to us.
 
It's really hard to say what happened with a lightning strike. Numerous things could be fried within in it and you'll almost certainly have to replace something. If it's an old machine it's probably not worth the money. Might be fun to poke around in though and learn a few things. Get back to us with exact specs when you can.
