Really Weird Browser Problem

Okay this is really weird... I looked around and I can't find out why it happens and I haven't found anyone else who has had the problem...

When I go to start a internet browser.. Firefox or Internet explorer for example it wont start... so I go into task manager after a while kill the process because maybe it hung or some thing and try again... nothing... now when I go and click shut down the computer wont shutdown, however whatever I tried to run will start up

... Any suggestions?

Yeah I'm gonna try re-installing them when i get home this afternoon.... but its both firefox and internet explorer... and it just cropped up... i've never had this problem... only started about 3 days ago.... Wouldnt be my firewall I dont think.. havent changed anything for months.....
could it have anything to do with an auto login process?... cuz I set that up recently

I'd also be concerned about security. If the applications are shown as running but you can't see them, maybe they are being used to send out info from your pc. Do the usual security scans and keep firewall closed until you are sure you are ok.

For help from those more in the know than me, you might want to elaborate on the auto login issue.

Yeah maybe... It was doing it with Azureus too... but I just had to kill the process once and start it again... the auto logon is nothing really... I just wanted to save myself some time so I went into the user control account panel - control userpasswords2 and unchecked Users must have a username and password to access this computer.... so yeah.. It's getting really annoying having to logout or restart my computer in order to use the net... so any suggestions would be very appreciated

Thanks a million

The behaviour is so strange I would still suspect malware. I recently had problems that NAV did not find but I did an online scan at BitDefender and it found the culprit (just about to do a scan actually).

Other things I would look at:

If you have a utility that shows open and hidden windows, check what is really there. Or, at least try Alt+Tab to see open windows. Are the windows open but you can't see them, such as minimized to zero size? Do you get the application appearing on the taskbar but no window appearing?

I would also try opening a new User account (no password) and see if the problem goes away. Although removing need for a password should not affect things, who knows. Generally things happen for a reason on a pc. If the problem started around the time you made changes...

Find an html page on your pc using Explorer, right-click and "Open With", choose browser. Alternative, try making your homepage an html page on your pc so there is no need to connect to the Net when the browser starts up (that's how mine is arranged anyway). Also try starting up like this with the firewall locked closed if you have permanently connected cable. Prevents any malware connection.

Run Hijack This to see if your browsers are being hijacked.

You should post your Hijack This log in the Computer Security forum with a brief explanation of your problem. More experts there. Maybe one of the moderators will transfer it for you.
