Hi All,

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I hope someone out there will be able to help me.

I have the sony Vaio VGN-FS515E and want to upgrade my standard processor to the INTEL MOBILE PENTIUM 780 SL7VB. The processor is quite expensive and i don't want to buy it and it not work..

the laptop was given to me and didn't cost a penny so i wanted to try and upgrade it as much as i could with out buying a new one or spending too much money. the processor is expensive but cheaper than buying a new laptop all together.

i have researched into it quite a bit and have found that the PENTIUM 780 SL7VB is compatible with the chipset, motherboard and socket so i was mainly wandering if there was any other compatibility information, such as power supply or cooler fan, i was missing that someone else may have encountered or be aware of.

any help will be much appreciated..

I wasn't quite sure what specs you needed so please feel free to ask and i'll post what ever you need.

I am still looking into this, as I have an idea. However, what CPU do you have right now?

EDIT- These sites say that you can pinmod. this and this.

Follow these directions and you could do it for free. However, I would recommend a bit more digging into it before you do it.

I did this with my laptop, and it worked great.

thanks for your reply...

when i checked the specs for the cpu i'm looking to upgrade to on the intel website ( http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27599&processor=780&spec-codes=SL7VB,SL8QK,SL8RF), it says that its compatible with the 915gms chip set which this laptop has, so i'm hoping that would be a suitable match.

my main consern is if it does work and start up it will over heat as the cooling might not be able to cope, or that the power supply wouldn't be up to scratch... i'm used to dealing with desktop upgrades do i'm abit of a noob when it comes to laptop upgrades..

i'm gonna contact sony to see if they can confirm, but thanks for your response and i'll check the links that you have pointed out..

cheers

I believe you have the 910GML chipset. http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/specifications/index.aspx?m=VGN-FS515E&l=en_GB

EDIT-If that is right, then you won't be able to get that cpu. You have a chipset that supports a 400MHz CPU, but the one you are looking at is 533MHz. My recommendation would be to overclock with that pin mod. I have the same CPU if you have the one on that page. It overclocks fine. As far as heat, my laptop handles that just fine.

If you insist on buying, here is a 2.0 GHz, which I would get.

EDIT2- Here is a 2.4 GHz. http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Mobile-Pe...CPU-SL6VC-/230511233841?pt=CPUs#ht_5734wt_930 Go for it.

i notice you pointed out that the fsb is 400mhz and the chipset is 910gml... i installed a program called CPU-Z to check my system details... now as i said i am a noob to all this but on the mainboard section (image http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/1058/chipsetb.png) it states that i have the 910gml and the i915gms, does this mean that i have both?

thanks for posting the links to the ones on ebay... the second one has a smaller L2 cache than the first link you sent, is this a bad thing or is the extra 400mhz worth of processor speed out weigh the l2 caches benefits?

thanks again for all of your help!!!

Does CPUz say this :"Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family" or something like that? You will only have one though. And I really don't know about the other question.
