Plus it helps to use HIGH (I mean HIGH!) resolution photographs. You can always reduce them to the size you want. It just makes the job easier when you are working with something that is bigger.
 
If you want the people to overlap one another but are worried about lassoing them out, have the guy that cut them out for you send you the actual photoshop file. If you copy and paste a jpeg it doesnt preserve the cutout image it sticks a white background on it.
