right now i have an asus k8n motherboard (socket754) with an amd 64 3000+. im running a radeon 9700 pro with it. my question is, i am thinking about getting an xfx 6600gt video card. but my board will only support agp. would it be worth it to save a little more money and get a different motherboard along with the pci-e version of the card, or should i just wait another year or so and just get the agp version right now?

On paper it's fast, but I don't think graphics cards have really caught up with it's speed just yet. Either AGP or PCI should be fine now. I actually read a review once where they used a 6800GT and the AGP was slightly faster...

pci-e isnt faster.. it just has aq bigger bandwith, thats all.
but pci-e is worth it, for some cards. because some cards are a lot cheaper on pci-e as their agr brothers. and, agp cards arnt produced anymore (or almost), so if you want to upgrade later, of want to have the option to upgrade, i would go for pci-e

I think it is worth it for you to get the PCI-E now because it will cost more for you to upgrade your video card to a PCI-E in a year than it will for your motherboard. Hope that was understandable.

Well

I don't really think that there is any need for a whole upgrade. You already have a decent setup. I would simply go for AGP. You will not see any significant difference between the performance of the AGP versus PCI-E for now. Unless you want to invest into a new motherboard and a new processor, I don't believe it's worth it.

JAN :D

you could also buy a board with both slots. that way, you could use the card ur using now on agp, and if you're going to upgrade later, you can go for a pci-e card :)

its up to u on what u want to do and what your budget is. PCI-E is definatly faster. also AGP cards tend to be a little more money, not crazy more but mabe 5 to 10 bucks more than its pci-e equvilant.

Since the 9700Pro isnt a "crappy card" i'd look to a whole new setup and just OC for now

I dont know about it being worth it, but a PCI-E is alot faster.
Thats just the interface. The devices arent much faster

Either AGP or PCI should be fine now. I actually read a review once where they used a 6800GT and the AGP was slightly faster...
Thats because NV40 is natively AGP and they have to bridge it to PCIE

Hehe but more bandwidth IS faster ;)

ATi's next gen card the R520 is looking to be AGP capable :)

Yes! but the only downside is that the boards arent exactly the greatest ;)

PCI-E is definatly faster.
No it isnt.

also AGP cards tend to be a little more money
Only if the card is PCIE Native.
