opteron vs athlon X2

actually the opteron's will give you more than 10% if you get the right stepping... my friend overclocked his past 3ghz without overvolting (barely any heat added), and after 1.55V he got it to 3.4ghz
one example does not a rule make

There are always variances on the same model cpu seen when OCed by different people. Some batches of processors will OC better then others due to not having a lock. This is why I look at stock not OCed results when deciding on a model to choose.

I'd have to say I'm in full agreement with this. I look for a processor does at stock where the best place to look for information on OCing and what is best would be discussed intensely in OCing forums. There they have the tips and tricks to see OC results.
well said friend!
overclock.net helped me get to 2.75ghz... but my temps were high so im waiting for my water cooler to leave it at those settings

When OCing you have to keep those temps down even more so due to the stress levels you place on the hardwares themselves. It doesn't hurt to have low temps on any system but OCing certainly calls for it. Just be careful to get that water cooler setup right. Often there isn't a lot room to move around with those in. You don't want to see leaks either. I haven't heard any here though.

well i guess id go with the x2 3800+ cuz its cheaper... but only because its cheaper.
either will perform just fine in gaming or anything even on a default clockspeed.

AMD usually gets the preference over Intel for performance. There shouldn't be any issues with the 3800+ in gaming in general. You may have to look into any patches for dual core cpus by the game manufacturers however. That would be there regardless of the model you went with. Quite often the softwares fail to keep up with the hardwares.

both the x2 and the 1xx opterons are pretty even on gaming, and are both excellent. I ended up going with the opteron because I use my pc as a workstation and the optys are slightly more stable and are built a little more 'heavy duty' than the x2s. and they can OC very easily. if you aren't going to oc, go x2. you can OC with both very well, so if you were you could use both. The performance difference isn't much, it's more about the extras that the opteron has that might change your mind.

I am certainly more serious about the Opteron 185 running it stock even though smacking some other then stock cooling onto it. The stability issue is more important on a system left running 24/7.
