opteron vs athlon X2

lets say i got a opteron 250(2.4ghz) and put it up against a X2 3800(2.0ghz). Which would be better for gaming/dvd burning?????? I noticed the opteron has a lower HT speed, i think its 1000 vs 2000 with the x2. the opteron has more cache and i hear it overclocks really well. are they any good boards out there for 940 sockets?

give me your opinions, im tryin to plan this rig out and id hate to buy the new cpu just to find out a month from now i should have gone the other way.

i really like the setup made up of the x2 3800 and a DFI SLI-dr, or the dfi above that, the CF or whatever
 
well the opteron would greatly increase the cost, the boards are damn expensive, so im goin x2. thanks anyway. feel free to answer reguardless of my decision. my curiosity still stands.
 
If your a gamer i would go for the Athlon 64 X2 ! Its a 90nm core and should run cool giving you head room for overclocking.
 
Some are also looking at the FX-60 instead of a dual core model for gaming. A preference now after first looking at the 4800+ X2 will now be the Opteron 185 dual core S939 model for the next build when the price will have dropped in probably early 2007. I want to get several more months out of this old case before cranking an Opteron up. My interest is not OCing however or limited to gaming. I often run a few other things that need a good build.
 
the opteron is single core while the x2 is dual core. For current games, i believe the opteron would be better, but for future games made for dual core, the x2 should be better.

Opterons have both single and dual-cores.

I dont know why you would get a socket 940 opteron, i would go with a socket 939, then you can still get that DFI motherboard.
 
Am I right by saying that S939, dual core, opteron's are simply hand-picked athlon X2's with 2mb of cache? If so, then, if you can afford to, go for an opteron.
 
Opterons have registered cache memory and socket 940- this makes them very stable, for servers, that sort of thing, but it doesnt allow a lot of raw power. Get the X2/FX if you are going to game.

opteron 165 is for socket 939 :)
they're stable, which is a good thing. also, along with the stability and more cache they're more overclockable too.

don't buy an FX they have possibly the lowest performance/price ratio.

as i said, you can put an opteron into a 939 motherboard.
 
The Opteron 185 is the highest in the line for the Socket 939 boards. The other models are for Socket 940 server boards. Essentially the Opterons are the high end of the AMD line. Many gamers are now going with the Opteron 165s if not the 185. Right now the costs are up there since their the newest. But most go with the best model that is affordable. You match the model for the total costs of all other hardwares combined.
 
ya, opteron 165 i have, is really good,
but i'd say opteron 250 is like the most random cpu you can have,,,,

isn't that socket 940 by any chance? i am just lazy to look it up though
 
most likely. i believe all of the 2XX opty's are socket 940 i could be wrong though.
get the opteron 165, its probably the best overclocking dual core chip on the market...
 
Those above the Opteron 185 dual core are for the most part Socket 940 server models where there are several S939 models like the 165 and 185 Opterons. http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA22051 takes a look at the Opteon 165 the lowest. actually the opteron's will give you more than 10% if you get the right stepping... my friend overclocked his past 3ghz without overvolting (barely any heat added), and after 1.55V he got it to 3.4ghz :)
thats one damn fast processor. lol

I'd have to say I'm in full agreement with this. I look for a processor does at stock where the best place to look for information on OCing and what is best would be discussed intensely in OCing forums. There they have the tips and tricks to see OC results.:rolleyes:
