Norton IS adaware

OMG I cant f'ing believe it. Norton have now resorted to making there product in a way ad aware or a virus.

I have avoided Norton like the plague for the past 5 years. Now I turn my computer on and suddenly Norton System Scan is installed, which I have most definitely never given my permission for. So I think well maybe there was a slim chance it came bundles with something else, so un-installed it.

Well I leave my computer turn it off and go out. When I get home and boot it up again. It has reinstalled itself. Surly this is illegal ! !

Jon

Well thanks I will do that now. Although I was posting more along the lines that I was shocked Norton would do this.

So you think it isn't Norton but just some ad aware posing as Norton?

Ok that scanner did not find anything
AVG did not find anything

I'm not going to open the shortcut it puts on my desktop cos I don't know what it is.

Here is a screen shot of the directory its in, its desktop icon AND my processes running.

Does this look like its a legitimate Symantec product? Or is it fake, and if it is real how can they get away with it?

Do they create a log file? or will I need to rescan the whole thing. If they do create one I cant find anything in their directories.

In Malwarebytes' the log will be under the "logs" tab.
For HiJackThis you will have to run another scan but it only takes a few seconds, remember to chose "Do a system scan and save a Logfile". Once notepad appears just copy and paste the log in here. :)

Thanks for your time this is what I got

Hello:

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply i will need:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Update .... combo fix apparently does not work on Vista so cant use it

Dang, i wish they would make it compatible already.

Anyways, run a Kaspersky Online Scan.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html and click the Accept button at the end of the page.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

In your next reply i will need:

All that the Kaspersky scan showed was this
2008-12-13_1951.png

So as it found nothing I did not bother doing the HTS scan again. I will try Super Anti Spyware no, it has come highly recommended to me.

Ok it was an official Norton application. But one I did not give permission to be on my computer. And definitely not to keep reinstalling itself. Anyway after a very arsey email to them. I was told to uninstall the program then delete some temporary folders. TBH I could not be bothered to read what they put, so uninstalled it then did disk clean up. That fixed it and its gone forever :). Thanks for the time you put in.

Jon

I believe that norton sytstem scanner is an option to install when you download the new Java install program.

I was surprised nobody thought of just telling him to try running the norton uninstall utility. It would have saved a lot of time.

My opinion Norton 360 is the crappest AV in the world. I used it on my new computer (Years Subscription) when the year ran out went to AVG did a scan with AVG and i found Adware, Trojans, Spyware God knows how many Tracking cookies etc
