next next gen computers

what will desktop computers be like in 5 years from now. What will they be doing that modern computers can't do to lack of resources?

my guesses.
1. Central computer for smart house control
2. Realtime photo realistic gaming

I think we're going to start seeing programs that will use all of a computer's available threads, instead of being coded for a specific amount. Probably also a war between AMD and Intel over how many cores they can stuff in a chip, and how many threads. I bet we'll see Hyperthreading expand to 4 threads/core before too long.

I also think SSD drives will become the standard, with optical drives only used for large amounts of data storage. We'll probably see ungodly amounts of RAM as well. 5 years ago, 4GB was a huge amount. Now it's the standard, and 8GB is only a little over the top.

I'll be flying my car by then... no need for a computer.

isnt that what they said back in the 70's......

back to topic, IIRC dual core chips where just emerging back then (like 1.3ghz) and we are up to 8 cores, so i would say 8ghz 32 core chips hopefully.

Well intel said that pentium 4's could be clocked at up to 5ghz, but that never happened. I don't think we will see anything at 5ghz (stock clocked) for 4 years at least. You're right about intel/amd duking it out with how many cores they can stuff in a chip :P

Next up is die shrinking. we are already down to 32nm. my next guess is 20nm will be after that.

Hell, a few years ago we were still at 130nm! (socket 478 pentium 4 anyone?)

I read an interesting article stating that we have hit a threshold where if our computer technology doesn't get better, our computers will start getting bigger. More processors = more cooling = more power = bigger cases, etc...

But then again, do we actually need something that big? And that's where they went to say that we'll see more uses for computers more than improvements of computers.

where did you read this, cause the 32nm chips are coming out soon(smaller) and they also run cooler (less cooling) and are gonna be the i9 (more powerful)

It was some PC World Magazine while I was at the doctors office :P
