new to computers

I am sorry to ask such a simple question- most of you probably have been doing this for years! I have an Acer computer, with Windows XP Pro. It is supposed to have a CD and DVD burner. I have Windows Media Player. I want to copy a homemade DVD, but do not have the faintest idea how to start. When I Google 'how to burn a DVD', it gives me too much technical terms/info. I need simple terms and instructions. All the computer jargon that is normal to you is way over my head! I have a blank Maxwell DVD-R, 4.7 (2hr) . I could not find my burner- or how to use it even if I did, so a friend gave me the EAZY DVD site, which I downloaded, and also downloaded a 'patch', but I still can't do it. Is there a patient person out there who can guide me through this? Thanks mbg

If you simply want to make a duplicate of the DVD, any software supporting duplicating disks should work fine. Nero, Roxio, or whatever. If you want it on your HD, you should be able to drag and drop it to your HD, and probably play back with Media Player(I know Media Player Classic would play it back) I THINK something like TEMEPG would convert it to a better format, or maybe SUPER.

Stranglehold and The Other One- Yes, I have a DVD of a family birthday (98 years old), that my cousin made into a DVD from the camcorder. I would now like to make 2 more copies to send out. When you guys ask if I want it on my 'hardrive', are you asking if I want to store it in my computer? The Other One- Do I need Nero/Roxio also, besides what is already in my computer to do this? Can't I just use the Media Player- or is that just part of what I need? When you say 'drag' it to my hardrive, I do not understand- as I say, I am very new/dumb with the computer. What program would I have open? Sorry, but I need pretty specific steps... Thanks for any help

If you just want to make copies of it, as I said, just any old burning software should allow this. And no, as far as I know, Media Player won't do it. You need a dedicated burning program...

There might be some freeware burning software out there, but you should of gotten something with your drive/computer to do so... And I can't really give you specific steps until I know what software you're working with.

If you don't have any software that came with your computer, I might know of a few alternatives you could use... However, someone might know of a single program rather than my "multi program" solution that just popped into my head :P

The Other One- How do I find out what program I have- can I go to 'start', 'all programs'? Or would I go to 'my computer'? ThanksPS I tried to watch a different video today on the computer, but it only went for about 1 minute. I wonder if it is the computer...?? but the video is from the library so it might be worn out? More likely it is me! If you tell me hoe to find out what program I have , I will look. Thanks

You can go either place, but you're only suppose to go to "All Programs". But if you'd like to dig around your hard drive, more power to you...just don't alter or delete anything ;)

And your 2nd part...it went for a minute, then what?

The Other One- The movie ran for about a minute, then just stopped. (I am going to guess that it is about 10 minutes long). Without wanting to ruin my computer/settings, I guess I had better just make an appointment with someone who knows what they are doing, and have him/her show me. I know it is old hat to you guys, but without having a person right there to show you what to do, it is a puzzle to me. If there was just an easy way to do this, whith step by step instructions that would be fine, but most of what I have searched for involves more technical terms that even that is over my head right now!

I have the URL of a freeware program that will allow you to burn any file to a DVD. You can get this here.

I have the URL of another shareware program that is a DVD authoring program. You can get this here.

Oh my! I am so embarassed! I went to the computer/server today and asked if she could show me how to do the dvd. Well, the program was right there in front of me, on the desktop- NTI-Maker 7. It was so easy- 1&2 steps listed right there. I now know how to do the dvd/cd! Thanks for everybody who tried to help me with this over the net.:)
