New RAM or OS Error?

Hi,

Well, this figures (just my luck). I bought 2GB of DDR2-800 G-Skill RAM, 1 GB per stick for my Asus P5Q Pro motherboard. I wanted to upgrade to 6GB of RAM, so, why not? I had a $25 Newegg refund I could use anyway, got the two sticks for $15.00 total.

Anyway, I popped 'em in. I originally had 4GB (2x2GB sticks) of the same speed RAM. I put a red 1GB stick and a blue 2GB stick next to each other in one pair of slots and the 1 red and 1 blue together in the next pair. Started the computer up... and nothing! I knew this would happen, really, I did.

I checked my BIOS. It was recognizing all 6144 MB of RAM. However, prior to shutting down my PC, the system configured for some updates. I have checked that yes, my BIOS North Bridge Memory Remapping is indeed enabled (though I'm sure somebody will ask me anyway lol). After the Windows' loading thing is over (I still use Vista Home Premium, sigh) it comes into an empty black screen that hangs for a good few minutes. Then, I just get a BSOD with a crash memory dump with a c0000218. Also, this is the root of the dump:

SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software

Is this a memory issue or did the configuration of Windows Updates screw it up?

Pull out the old memory and replace it with the new RAM. Experiment using one module at a time and see if you can get it to work. Be sure you touch the unpainted metal on your computer case before handling any RAM modules.

Safe mode is a no-go too. When at the black screen, my HDD has a low periodic rumble that kicks in, then goes away for 3 seconds, then comes back until the black screen o' death appears. Then the c0000218 error hits.

With the Vista recovery disc, though, I can access my C:/ Drive just fine, it's still detected by the PC and such.

Make a back up of your valued data a separate storage device before you try fixing the operating system. If you do not do this you could end up regretting it.

Will do. I'll transfer the important stuff to my laptop here in a bit. I so far have tried it with:

The original 4 GB of RAM.
1x 1 GB stick.
All 4 sticks.
2x 2GB, 1x 1GB.
2x 1GB, 1.

Uhh, what the hell? New error. Just as I type here, let's take a look at this wonderful blue screen.

mv61xx.sys

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

STOP: 0X000000D1.

That's all the important stuff, anyway. It's gathering data for a crash dump. Sounds like my HDD is failing, eh? Fun stuff. Figures, its been 3 years.

Either that or I really somehow screwed it up when it was trying to install updates.

My handy dandy Windows Vista Recovery CD suggested a system restore. Trusting him in his warm guidance, I suggested it. Now, for some reason, it cleared and is not at a black screen but is doing a CHKDSK run on my D:/ drive... which is a blank 250GB hard drive from my old old computer that I just use for extra storage. What the hell is going on?

The system restore did the trick. I think I may have accidentally turned off the computer in the middle of configuring updates... so, that might explain why it went to hell, but, still, does anything that happen show any evidence of HDD failure or just a jammed OS that appears to now be fixed?

Glad to hear System Restore did the trick. I would try out the new modules of RAM now that you got your Windows operating system fixed. See if they work correctly. Be sure to take proper electrostatic precautions with the RAM.
