NEED help overclocking

I'm new to overclocking and i'm trying to overclock the rig in my signiture. I went into the bios and enabled it so i could overclock then set the PCIE frequency to 100 and my DRAM setting or something like that to DDR2 800 then upped the FSB bus from 266 up to 267 and it boots fine but then i go back into it and up it to 268 and it wont boot. It saves the settings then the screen goes black my mouse shuts off and the computer its self stays on all the fans and the power light stays on but it wont do anything so then i shut it off and turn it back on and it comes up saying the overclock failed press F1 to go the BIOS and F2 to go back to default settings or something like that. Whats the problem? What do i need to do so i can overclock ?:confused::confused:

check temp, if okay then try upping the voltage. make sure to disable stuff like speed step/thermal control and spread spectrum.

Either you have an very non-overclocking motherboard, somethines overheating...
Well its supposed to be a very good overclocking board and everythings pretty cool as far as temps.

Temps are pretty good. I havent tried upping the voltage and i dont have any of those things disabled, so i guess i'll start with that. Why should i disable these things?

emi will mess up the processor if you overclock with spread spectrum enabled. thermal control you wouldn't want the processor to downclock when you want faster speed.

Try going to 270. You can usually up the speeds in the BIOS by 3-5Mhz at a time, at least. With Core 2 Duos, in the beginning I'd go up by 10 a time :P.

About it not working at 267, don't worry about it. There will always be "holes" along the way where it won't boot, but further up it will. Sometimes these holes are as big as 30Mhz, usually in the FSB400 area.

I went with 270 and it worked just fine i guess i just hit a "hole"
Thanks for your help Jet!!!

Just do what I usually do, crank it up 5Mhz at a time and once you get errors or crashes ease back 2Mhz at a time until you find your sweet spot.

I want my cpu to still last me along time so what things should i look for to know when to stop overclocking so it will still last a while?

Thats what i have been doing so far. I'm currently up to 2.68Ghz and i'm aiming for 3.2Ghz.
Since we have the same motherboard and CPU, why dont you set it to what mines at and see if it will boot?

For starters, this is what mines set to off the top of my head:

CPU:
Voltage: 1.5125
Multiplier: 8x
FSB: 400Mhz

RAM:
Voltage: 2.15
Speed: 400Mhz (800)
Timings: 4-5-5-11

If you want I can give you the specs for when I had it up to 3.33Ghz as well.

It will still last a while, but lets face it, none of us gamers will keep a processor for more then 5 years. But theres also no need to really stress it, which is why I set my processor back down to 3.21Ghz, since I could lower the voltage. And for me, these settings are completely stable.

ok I'm at 3.0GHz right now so i'll overclock a bit more to 3.2Ghz and see how it goes. The voltage you have listed for cpu is the vcore correct? cause my vcore is @ 1.25v right now

Yes, but when I set it to 1.5125, the BIOS shows that the current VCORE is around 1.4v.

Ok i got it up to 3.2Ghz and it wouldnt boot it just kept loading the post screens and then before it got to the windows loading screen it would shut off and kick out to the post screens again and it would keep doing that so i upped the voltage a bit and now it boots. But like the windows loading screen like comes up and sits there for a bit then finishes loading like the pic and then the bar starts moving like its loading. Plus when i'm listening to music and get into PC Probe II the program that came with the board to tell you information it turns the wave volume to zero so i cant hear anything. Whats up with that? Plus how do i tell if its gonna run stable at what i have it set at??
