I don't want to make this thread a fight or anything like that... Mods and admins, feel free to lock this thread if it goes too far, or edit my post if I say anything wrong.

Now, I know that most of you ever used pirated software, it's almost impossible not to, and there is a good reason: Windows tends to be very expensive in available software, since most of it is commercial, and just very little is free.
But I beg you, stop doing that, stop using pirated software. Think like you was the programmer that spent maybe years of hard working to make it work, he maybe spent a lot of money, and he would like to see that his worked payed off. Pirating his program will make him feel sorry for wasting so much time and money, and he may never bring new improved versions, patches or updates. But buying it, it's like saying 'Thanks' to him, you help him earn his living, and encourage him.
It's very hard to tell you how hard is for me to choose a career for the future. I want to become a programmer, and I'm now in the high school, 3 years away from the university, and these are my last 3 years when I can choose what I want to become. It's very sad to think that I may create very good software, spend a lot of time and money to do it, and I try to sell it to earn my living, and then find it everywhere on the internet for free. If I realize that I'm just wasting my time and money trying to make something useful for people, and all I get is a big hole in my budget, I'm sure I will be very disappointed and I will quit creating software.

This is also available for music, movies... there is a lot of effort in making a single CD with music, trust me.

I beg you, please help me, help many programmers that put a lot of effort in their programs.

If you feel like you simply can't stop using pirated software, try changing your operating system to Linux (any distro you want) where most software is free, even open source.

I know that most of you are teenagers, so it's your time to do something against piracy.
I beg you, please stop using pirated software.

If you don't, you may be sorry later when the programmers will stop creating software, when singers will stop recording CDs because of pirated music, movie makers will stop making movies and so on.

So I beg you, please stop using pirated software.

I do somewhat agree with what you say, But at the end of the day it still comes down to price.....For some paying $229 for a genuine copy of Vista is just too much and they would rather put that cash towards other things.

If the developers in software and Artists in music didn’t charge so much for their stuff then more people would genuinely buy them and they would make more profit.

Imo i think that Piracy is only going to get worse if the price of things keep on increasing.

I am probably going to get alot of flack for this but pirating for the most parts hurts noone. This is at one extreme but an example is Bill Gates. The guy is a billionaire. Does he deserve it? I think not. He has a huge team working for him and they get paid a salary regardless of how many copies they sold. The thing about Music and Software is that once you make it all the rest of the money coming in is profit. It's not like a phone for instance that cost them money for each unit they produce. A software company just has to copy their product over and over and burn it onto a Disk. How much is a disk? I understand that there is labor involved up to that point plus people to debug the product and all that but they do not deserve the money they ask for it. If the big wigs of these companies didn't make such extortionate amounts of money maybe their software would be affordable to the public and they would get more sales.

It does suck for the little guys but 99% of the time it isn't their software that is being pirated. Also I have respect for Singers/Musicians but they do not deserve to be millionaires. A open heart surgeon does. I have the same feeling towards professional athletes. It's ridiculous the money they make for playing a fricking game. What did they ever do to deserve it?

I understand your point but this is a world wide issue. Also, you must understand that some not all pirate software crack by hacker but by the same programmer. For example how do some of the software get leak out when it still in a beta.
Ofcourse people who work for that company regardless if Microsofts or any other software companies.
There are a lot of people that work for software company whose also like to brag and chat on forum and next thing you know they leak out the information about a new software or Windows. A good example of this would be Nero 8 back in 2007 was supposed to be out on the 1st of October, but it seems that pirates have managed to get a copy of it three weeks before the official release. Nero 8 can be downloaded from torrent networks. The leaked version is real and it has been verified by a lot of downloaders. It comes as an ISO file of about 960MB.

I can undertsand that for leaked software but still the general Computer User would not be on the interent looking for the Prerealesed copy. They will walk in a Best Buy or Future Shop and will ask what do I need to make a copy of this disk and the worker will point them to the Nero 8 sitting on the shelf thats priced at 60 dollars. The people that downloaded that Prerealesed version is probably the same people that would have downloaded the illegal copy anyways. Also Nero isn't hurting for money. Also there are free peices of software on the internet that you can download legally that do the same thing. How can one person give something away free when another is charging 60 dollars? Take a look at the Antiviruses. AVG does everything that any user would need and it's free. It's too many people in the mix that do not need to be there. The people that actually do the work get paid next to nothing and the Board members are the one rolling in the cash. It's very uneven.

There was a band awhile back (I think NIN) that gave away there CD free online and said donate w/e you think it's worth. Some gave nothing but most people gave around 5 dollars. NIN did not have to pay a record label or producers and all that for the release. Usually they would make only $1 per CD after everyone else took their share. NIN made more money from doing this then if they had gone the traditional route. This is what I am trying to explain that there are too many people getting paid for doing nothing. The money does not go into the pockets of the programmers/artists.

im sorry but if company really want people to stop copying the software, then just force people to buy, it aint rocket science, i mean valve have done it and steam has been round for years, MS's whole windows activation thing it useless and so easy to get around, i really cant beleave MS will be keeping it in win 7.
bottom line for people like MS look at what other companys are doing and copy then, MS did that with FF, why not do it with steam?

I would say pirating an operating system is one of the worst things to do, because you use it every day. A $600 copy of photoshop might seem steep, but 63 percent of OS marketshare is still on XP. A large percentage of those users have probably purchased or owned XP for atleast a year or two. That's like paying $.30 a day to use.

Radiohead did this marketing scheme as well. They released their album In Rainbows on their site and allowed their fans to pay as much as they wanted to help support them

I am also going to program for the rest of my life, and pirating is the reason I'm going open source with just about everything I'll do. But think about it, most of the programmers get payed for their time coding anyway, as most of them work for a company that pays them to write the program. Sure, the pirating may cause the company to lay people off, but you'll still get paid for what you do.

EDIT: I'm a purist when it comes to music and think all music should be free. It's not some thing for record labels to make billions off of, it's stuff that comes from the heart that should be free of charge. I could understand paying to go to a concert though.

$200 for an OS is rediculous, more than a 4870. The only point of an OS is its a platform to run other programs on. I would have linux if I didnt NEED windows for my games to work, its proprietary. There is an inelastic demand curve for it so they can charge pretty much whatever they want, and they do. a way to stop pirating of windows is for companies/programmers to make games and programs that dont run on windows, then people wont need it.

I concur thoroughly.

To be honest id just be happy that someone likes using my program and they would go that fare to get the program id actually feel honoured. I do see where your coming from though but i dont think everyone is going to stop just because you say so pointless thread in my opinion.

Business models are flawed. Do you think the average person in China is going to spend 1 month's salary on a legit copy of Windows when they can buy a pirated copy on the streets for an equivalent of 1 dollar? Which is about 1/300 of the cost of Vista Ultimate in US Dollars.

Music industry is old and run by lawyers and business people, not artists. Artists need to become more business savvy and run their own business. Also, bands make all their money from touring and selling merch, not CD sales. If you want to support a music artist go see them live and buy their expensive shirts and CDs at the show. I have paid $30 for a concert t-shirt I could have bought for $10 online at the show, to support the band.

In some cases piracy helps too. The Man From Earth is a very low budget indie film, which got no press from anyone. Then it showed up on torrent trackers and got an internet following. Now the creators are thanking the people that pirated it otherwise it would have never been viewed.

Writers, programmers, engineers, sales people get paid a fraction of what they make for the company. Actors may be the only exception since they get paid millions and in my opinion only a few deserve to get paid that much. If a film cost 100 million to make, and they pay the lead actor 20 million, that is 1/5 of the cost. How much do you think the script writer gets? The key grip? The camera man? How much does the programmer make that codes an OS? If they make 100s of millions of dollars in sales they don't make that much. They may be bonuses or kick backs but they aren't getting paid as much as the executives and their jobs are always expendable.

When times get tough, do executives take pay cuts to keep the company afloat? No, they do lay offs.

In reality, piracy is a problem and a solution to some things and a lot of it stems from faulty business models. If microsoft lowered their prices to $50 or $75 for a copy of Windows lots of more people would be inclined to buy it. If a DVD cost say $8 dollars people would buy more of them. Why pay $16 for a CD from BestBuy that only has 8 tracks on it and is 26 minutes long? When you only like one song off that CD?

There is a balance to be had and the people running these businesses either don't want to take the steps to make more money or they don't care, or they are just too greedy. I am not saying I have the answers but I think if the Internet was the business model more people would buy stuff online. Think about buying an ISO of a DVD movie online for 5 dollars. I mean that takes all the production, shipping, and a lot of marketing costs of getting that DVD to the retail stores to begin with, thus passing the savings onto the consumer.

+1 Good stuff man. The problem is people need to get more savvy. To understand what they are buying especially when it comes to software. If a product is good it will sell itself. You shouldn't have to spend 10 million on a marketing campaign to sell your Software. Spend that 10 million into making a great product.

The worst these days is the garbage they call rap. Half the time the Lyrics do not make any sense at all but it's gobbled up by today's youth. It's puzzling how these people with no talent at all can make millions. Just because it has some overplayed samples from other songs with a catchy beat. Crazy.
