Hi Guys

I was wondering what you thought of my computer i just built myself, it has the following:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 B.E CPU
MSI 785GM-E51 Motherboard
2 GB DDR3 1333 Mhz RAM(although i do plan on putting at least another 2 GB in).
Radeon 4890 Graphics Card
1 tb HDD
DVD/RW Lightscribe Drive
700 Watt PSU

I wanted to know your thoughts on this setup. I can get Crysis warhead to go at 38 or so fps when everthing is set to Enthuiast, 8xAA and 1620 by somthing ratio(i think its 1620, 1200 but i carn't quite remember) on a 22" LCD screen.

everything looks pretty good.

what brand of power supply is that?

I had originally a 600 watt storm PSU but as it was only cheap from ebay,(somthing like £25) it couldn't handle the demands of the computer and started to crash after a short while of loading crysis and even somtimes loading windows.

The one i am using now is a X-Power ATX SLI PSU 700 watt one which is much better, although it still seems to get very hot at times but i haven't had any real problems with it. I think it could be that there isn't much circulation of air inside the computer case as it isn't a great quailty case, this is somthing i will be changing shortly.

like everything except the motherboard luke i dont like msi motherboards i have one in my medion desktop and it doesnt have an ide slot on it at all.

I like almost everything, except the PSU, it's off-brand.

Don't underestimate MSi motherboards, they're really great budget motherboards.

+1, the PSU that you have probably performs as well as a 450W decent brand one

Except a 450W quality unit wont blow up in your face and ruin your motherboard and disc drives like a cheap one will when it fails.(and its more of when, not if, because its only a matter of time for a rig like that with a 4890 is the psu gonna blow)

I would recommend you switch to a branded power supply before you think about buying a new case.

oh yea forgot that bit :)

They do look quite good when they go pop though I have to say :P

A 450 watt PSU no matter how good a quailty would eventualy fail from the stress it would be under from this setup if not straight away, i agree the first PSU was poor quality but the one i am using now isn't. As for you thinking this PSU was cheap it was not.

Actually a 450W quality unit could pretty easily run your setup, your only talking maybe 350-400W under load, and a quality unit would have a majority of the power on the +12v rails. The "X-power 600w" is made by HEC which is a manufacturer of low end/cheap power supplies:

The only time $45-50 is going to get you a good unit of that wattage is if you are buying used or recertified, a good quality 500W unit new costs around the same as that unit.

ide slots are old thye should really take those off for good take up space

yeah they are old hat but think you should still at least get one on motherboard just incase you either have old ide gear or even if you not to test ide gear for repairs your doin for people i had to go and buy a full kit that runs via usb so i can plug ide stuff when im testing.

If this is true then why are the majority of people giving that PSU a five star review, with regard to that PSU i would agree that it is probably no the best quailty judging from the price, although the one i bought was 3x that price and i know that its good quailty. Just because the make isn't well known doesn't mean to say its not a good quailty PSU. PSU's with Pci-e connectors on them even low quailty ones carry the magority of thier power on the 12v rails as these are the most used connectors such as the molex connectors.

yeah luke the brand name doesnt mean its not good, i think some people like to have the big brands because they do have their reputation for a reason, usually due to the good quality, reliable and long lasting products they produce, but sometimes you can save yourself a bit by buying a good up and coming brand.

HEC not the worse but (nowhere) near the best. Cheap is for a reason. And its not a new up and coming brand. HEC has been around along time and I really dont believe they will be the next PC Power & Cooling anytime soon.

If you want a mid range power supply stick with something like a BFG/Mushkin/Lowerend OCZ/Xcilo

Incorrect, first off a review on newegg means absolutely nothing. Second, the hec units are incredibly low quality using cheap components in them. Generally speaking hec is well know, well known for being lower end and cheap. Just because you paid 3x the price of what its worth does not mean that it is a good power supply whatsoever. The X-power 700W is made by the same manufacture as the 600W hec X-power unit, and both are known to be cheap power supplies.
