Mozilla (Firefox) has released version 3.6.9

Mozilla has released version 3.6.9 of its popular Firefox Web browser in order to address numerous security issues, many of which are rated as critical.

In total, ten of the security advisories bear the critical impact key, but the actual number of patched vulnerabilities is higher since one of them covers "several memory safety bugs in the browser engine."

By Mozilla standards critical means that the flaw can be exploited remotely by attackers to execute arbitrary code on targeted systems.

This update also fixes a weakness, which exposed the browser to attacks leveraging a Windows design flaw known as binary planting or DLL hijacking.

The vulnerability affects hundreds of applications and stems from the way Windows searches for DLL files to load when no absolute path is specified.

"Firefox attempts to load dwmapi.dll upon startup as part of its platform detection, so on systems that don't have this library, such as Windows XP, Firefox will subsequently attempt to load the library from the current working directory.

"An attacker could use this vulnerability to trick a user into downloading a HTML file and a malicious copy of dwmapi.dll into the same directory on their computer and opening the HTML file with Firefox, thus causing the malicious code to be executed," is explained in the Mozilla security advisory.

Two cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities discovered in separate components, one rated as high and one as moderate, have also been addressed.

Two other fixed flaws are rated as low, but one of them actually has a critical impact on older products based on Gecko 1.9.1, like Firefox 3.5, where it allows for remote code execution.

The new Firefox 3.6.9 also adds support for for the X-FRAME-OPTIONS HTTP response header, which can be used by webmasters to prevent clickjacking (UI redressing) attacks.

I think il stick with version 3.0.19,Not had any problems with that version.

lolwut?

I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

I have to agree with him....older versions are better and faster then the newer versions. They added to much bloat to Firefox to please everyone and I personally I wanna see a lite version that doesn't have all the RSS feeds and crap.

Go try a old version of Firefox...you will be surprised.

issues has been in the past is pluggins that didn't work and and newer ver. i don't upgrade to fast because of it.

I'm currently playing with 4.0 beta 5. I can't really say that I like it...but I can't say that I don't. It's different, and if I remember correctly, much more resembles chrome. Though, I haven't used that in a long while.

I really think the one that is important is a ver.
Not a release. Ver is major and release with the ver is a minor.
won't being doing again quickly.

I hope I'm not the only idiot that didn't really understand that....

Well, from what I've done with it, it's okay. The tabs are now above the address bar, and now you have the option to organize them like chrome. The overall appearance is just a little different. No crashes yet. oh and the sync thing that you can download is now integrated in the web browser.

Your right but will explain it.
Read the release and what it does. Security or critical.
Yes. take it. if it does not apply then ya might not need it.

Same with Windows update. works the same way.
just because its there does not mean ya need it.
Its not rocket science. Mostly window updates.
Might not ever apply to you.

Wait a second, are you talking about the appearance of the new Mozilla Firefox update? Because i just updated it and it looks the same as before.

Or you could just use a faster, lighter, more secure browser like chrome. Honestly firefox has become what it tried to replace IMO.

Guess I'm switching over.. Since, now that I think about it, I don't use any of the bloated features firefox comes with.

+1

So Chrome is better than Firefox? I've never used it though.

Way better! My Chrome opens with 6 tabs, my Firefox with only Google. Chrome will open and have all tabs loaded before Firefox even opens with Google. Also Chrome has a good bit of add-ons now.

I personally just love the simple clean look of chrome.
