move win 7 to new machine?

I built a new i 7 computer. I want to removemy win 7 professional full version OS from the old computer and install it on the new machine, then load linux on the old machine, and donate it to goodwill. Will there be a problem with microsoft?

You will need the Product key, but it will be possible. UNLESS the old machine was bought as a single unit, then the win7 is tied to the motherboard.

I built both computers and bought the OS with a poroduct key. I ask because my vista was cancelled by microsoft when I sent a defective main board back to the vendor for repairs. When I reinstalled the main board MS wouldn't validate the purchased copy of vista that had been previously installed on this same computer, they said it was "already in use". I was not able to find a phone number to contact them about the matter. I wouldn't want to have my present copy of windows 7 arbitrarily cancelled.

As long as you have the full retail install cd then you can install it on multiple computers as long as its not active on the previous system. When asking to activate windows, if it doesn't automatically activate then it will show you a number to call for activation.

windows activation

HI john. It's been a couple of years since my vista was rejected but I'm almost 100% sure there was no number to call, merely an offer to sell me a new key. At that time I did place a notice for anyone who knew a number that would reach MS and no one answered. I won't buy another OS from MS. If my win 7 is cancelled like vista was I'll be 100% linux from now on.

Never said if your Windows 7 was a OEM or Retail DVD. US Windows activation (888) 571-2048

I tried microsoft through the listed method and again got nothing but the run around. I then tried the number listed above by stranglehold and it worked great. thanks I never would have got through without it. they agreed to validate win vista but unfortunately my compaq 3000 laptop couldn't run vista. There were no sound and video drivers that applied to vista. I did ask about reusing win 7. it's ok to reuse a purchased copy but in only one couputer at a time. No one could give me a reason why they wouldnt let me reuse vista for 2 years. it was a legal purchased copy. Long story short, I loaded the presario with ubuntu 11.1 and it works great, had all the drivers.
