Media Server?

I just got an old Dell Computer from my Uncle, it's got a, (I'm going from memory here) Celeron Processor clocking at 2.4 Ghz, 220GB HDD, and, (Here's the disgusting part) 256 MB of RAM . Is this acceptable in a media server? All I want is to have all of my music on it, my videos, and other things of that nature that I can access from my Xbox, my other computers, and maybe a wi-fi laptop. Would upgrading to 1GB or 2GB of RAM benefit me in any way or is RAM not important in a Media Server like this?

Thanks,

I'l take a stab at it :P

I would upgrade to at least 1gb of RAM. Depending on that OS you are using that might be the min that you would want to work with.

On the other hand I bet you can find a really light weight Linux OS that will run with those specs.

It's running XP Home at the moment, would it be beneficial to upgrade it to 1GB then? It's for iTunes, Windows Media Player, and other things like that so I don't think Linux would be an option.

I would think so but if you already have it running on 256mb then just try it out and see. If there are performance issues you might want to up the RAM a bit.

If the PC that is playing the music has iTunes and WMP then AFIK it does not matter where the files come from. It should be able to read the source whether it is a windows OS or not.
