Major random slowdown issue.

Hello, long time since I have been here.
I am having a strange issue with my computer, it has only happened when running 3d programs (games). Everything will be fine then suddenly it stutters, the audio seems to echo and crackle, the cursor is hard to use and skips, and keyboard commands have a huge delay. If you somehow manage to access the menu and exit the program the computer will still be running extremely slowly, almost impossible to use, the audio still crackles and echoes and the cursor still skips, any commands have long delays. If you look at the task manager the cpu usage is usually somewhere around 25%, which is much higher than it usually runs at a standstill. I have usually just gotten frustrated with going through the time of actually hitting start/turn off/restart (it runs this slow), so I usually just hit the restart button. Once the computer is restarted everything is back up and running like new.
I have never encountered such a problem, any guidance to what this may be would really be appreciated.

The next time it does it go back into task manager and find the process that is using the most cpu percentage and report back. I'm guessing you may have bad drivers on video card since you say this happens after playing games. I would try updating the video card drivers first. What video card do you have?

I updated the drivers on 10-16-2010, and this is happening on older games, like UT2004 and LFS. I did look at what was using the most cpu processing, and it was normal things that are usually there from what I am remembering, but I will go ahead and do what you said next time it happens. I know I have had different issues with my video card in the past, sometimes it would just slow down, but not as bad, and I had to shut the game down, the computer ran fine with the game off (somtimes putting the game in window and back to full screen worked), I restarted my computer and things were like new, but this doesn't seem to be the same problem.

I have an nvidia geforce 9800 GT
AMD phenom II x4 965 processor
3328 mb of ram (4 gigs just on 32 bit system)

Download the latest drivers for that card for your OS and see if that helps any. Usually new drivers are created every month that may fix this issue.

Ok, well I updated the drivers, it is still happening. I don't even think it is the graphics card, shutting the game down does not bring the computer back up to running speed, I hope it isn't a cpu or ram problem. I am going to clean up my computer, run virus checks and spyware checks including in the registry, get rid of all adware, disk cleanup and defrag, and just see what happens from there. I doubt any of this will be a fix but I am desperate.

Then do this procedure and post the logs.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Ok, well what I did didn't work, starting to wonder if something went bust on my computer. I did what you asked here are the logs. I really appreciate your time.

Ok, so it did it again, I was sticking around in task manager looking at the processes during one of these slowdowns. System idle process was blinking like crazy in the task manager, it was stuck on cpu-99 though which isn't much different to what it is now running normally. Cpu usage sitting on the desktop with task manager on was idling anywhere from 25% to 30%, much higher than normal, as of now looking at tast manager while on this site the cpu usage idles anywhere from 1% to 3%. What I found the strangest, even though my computer was acting highly unresponsive the malwarebytes and hijackthis scans took no longer to complete from start to finish, but navigating it took much longer due to the slow responsivness of clicking buttons.

I saved logs on malwarebytes and hijackthis to see if anything was different on the logs during a slowdown and compared them to the logs I sent in the previous message, it appears to all be the same.

Also, I started disabling a few processes to see if anything would work, including an svchost which is suppose to be a normal system process. Point is I am not sure if that was what was related to what started happening, my toolbar on the bottom suddenly became a windows classic looking toolbar for about a minute before switching back to the xp toolbar.

I am thinking about removing one stick of ram at a time to see if that does anything to help, could a bad stick cause this problem? I doubt it is my vram because the slowdowns continue after shutting the game down, I doubt it is my graphics card at all really, perhaps it keeps happening on games because the games put a heavy load on the cpu?

I think I know what the issue is but not sure. Please post an uninstall list using hijackthis. Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager, click on save list and save it. Then copy and paste it back here. I can already see a program that needs to be uninstalled as this type of porgram causes more issues then anything.

Cool, that would be great, but if it turns out not to be the problem thanks again in advance for your time helping me with this, whatever the outcome.

The one program I see right off the bat without going through some of your other programs because i'm not familiar with them is

RAMpage

These ram releasing programs always more than anything cause issues with your system and should be uninstalled. So I would recommend uninstalling that program for now.

I downloaded it about a year ago, it never really helped anything anyway so I will remove it. Thing is, I suspected it and turned it off a day or two ago to see if a slowdown would still occur, and it did. I also turned off other programs that should be harmless just in case to eliminate potential answers, like java, adobe, and bitorrent, slowdown still occured. I really don't feel like doing a reformat, but will if I have to. I am starting to think this might be a hardware issue.

What about downloading and running memtest to see if maybe there is a bad stick of memory?

http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.5a.iso.zip

You will need to download the zip and unzip it and then use burning software to burn the image file to a cd and then boot to the cd and let it run for a couple hours.

Do you have an extra video card that you could try? Other than what i've suggested, you may have to reinstall windows to see if it still happens.

Cool, never knew there was software to check ram, I will try it tonight and get back with you.

No extra video cards here, maybe there is something I could try that will induce a really heavy workload on my cpu and ram without using the graphics card? That way if it still happens I can rule the card out.

Hmm, kind of embarassing but I am having trouble figuring this out. Is there a free cd burning utility that works with this? I looked online and found imgburn but it isn't working, says it is incompatible. Nerolite doesn't seem to have anything for burning images either.

IMGburn incompatible with XP? Can't be. What message are you getting? IMBburn will burn the image file to cd.

Ok, I got it to work, don't know why but somehow the way I was extracting it before wasn't allowing imgburn to find the right files, I got it to work this time, I ran it for six hours and it found multiple things, so I am thinking of trying one stick at a time to see if I can isolate the problem. I just read that it runs through your cpu as well, and errors detected can also be a cpu problem, I really dread that possibility. Anyway, here is a picture right before I finally shut it down.

That definately looks like bad memory to me. Try known good memory and test it just to make sure its not the motherboard.

I am on a different computer right now running memtest again on the problem computer.
I have four 1 gig sticks, all matching of course. I am not sure which one or ones is bad, what I was planning on doing was run all four stick individually for one hour a piece, so far I have tested one that had no problems in that time. When I find one that has any errors I will set it aside for no further use.
Hopefully this is the problem and not the motherboard, if all sticks come back clear the it must be one of the slots in the motherboard. After any problem sticks are taken out I will run it and see if I still have any problems.
I hope it is just a stick of ram, I will come back with an update when they are tested. Thanks so far.

Ok, so all four sticks came back clear, thing is I didn't notice until now exactly which test most of those errors are from the screenshot, I ran each stick for an hour and they were all clear of problems, but an hour ended at about about pass 4/test 8. Most of the errors on the screenshot were pass 5/test 5. There were a total of 14 errors though, more than what the limited room would show, so I assume the other errors must have been before pass 4.
So it seems to me like it must be one of my slots causing the problem, I have all four sticks in again waiting for the first error, I will then keep removing one stick at a time until the errors stop happening, then I will know what slot is the problem.
This is monotonous...

EDIT
Ok, finally got an error, now running on three slots.
