Mac OSX Panther, First Time Mac User

I get all the way to the install mac OS X screen where it says "Select a destination volume to install the Mac OS X software". and the only option i can click is go back. Please if you could explain it to me as if i was in 5th grade mac's are not my strong suite.

Can't you just select the hard drive from the list and then click "continue"?

I've only installed OS X a handfull of times and that's what I remember having to do; select the drive you want to install it on. Unless of course, no drive appears in your list.

P.S. why are you trying to reinstall it? Is it a brand new machine or a used one you are trying to get back to factory settings?

Trying to get back to factory settings, no drive will show up hopefully the pictures will help.

Well from what I see, the hard drive is only 2.4GB. How old is the machine? That drive is way too small for OS X.

Oh. Well there is some sort of protection on there from whatever is on there before, and that is the problem.

if disk utility cannot detect a HD then you have got a bad HD. You need to replace it, then boot off your installer DVD format the drive, then install OS X.

I just realized the 2.4GB drive is the DVD, so you must have a failed hard drive since Disk Utility doesn't see it.

So, the software can not be installed in the same disk of system?

You just made no sense.

To answer what I think you asked, of course you cannot install it to the DVD :P He had a bad hard drive which is why it didn't work.

Apple uses standard hard drives so a standard SATA or IDE 2.5" drive will work since you are using a laptop.

Hmm, you'd be better off installing tiger or leopard if possible, panther is pretty dated and not very compatible with todays software.

When you get your new hard drive of course

OK, I got it, I haven't met this situation when I install Mac OS 10.62, everything goes well when I install it, but when I restart to access the system, 5 languages appear and what the hell it is!
