I have 2 laptops one fujitsu siemens amilo d1845 the other a HP zd8000

Ive lost the OS recory disc that goes in first but i still have the drivers and utilities disc. My HP also has 2 discs one for the OS and the other for the drivers and utilities.

Can i use the OS recovery disc off the HP to format and load XP onto the fjs then continue as normal to load the rest?

Depends on how legal you want it to be. Odds are it will work, since they're recovery discs tho you'll probably have all the hp crap on your fujitsu. If it is the same version of windows and a similar release time you may actually be able to put in the correct product key (if it askes). If not then in technical terms you won't have your computers licensed properly even though you have rights to two licenses of windows. Again, depends how much you care about that.

You cannot use a recovery CD/DVD from another make or even model within the same make - you have to use what came with your machine OR you have to request a replacement medium because 1) it almost always won't work* and 2)it's illegal. Call/e-mail a Fujitsu rep and request a replacement medium.

*It usually won't work because, for example, on the HP CDs, there is a "list" set for a specific system board, processor, n/s bridges, and what have you and the contents on the media "expect" those components or it just won't work. Of course all these will be different in your Fujitsu, so as a security measurement (to prevent piracy), this will not work. It's also illegal as well, even though you have both licenses. Just call Fujitsu and see if you can request a replacement medium - this should be no more than $5 or $10.

technically, if the hp came with a standard windows xp disc (which it didn't) and it allowed you to enter a product key and if it were able to take the product key from the fujitsu then it would be legal. Microsoft doesn't give a crap about the disc you use to install as long as you have the correct product key for the machine.

If you look on the envelope containing the media, it says "Not to be used with any other product besides (such-and-such) model no. (such and such) it sometimes says "Under penalty of law (Gateway in particular)- Also, it has been old hat that recovery media almost always won't work with other makes and models. That's because each make and model has different hardware - so it will not work. He'll just need to 1) call Fujitsu for a replacement or 2)buy a "clean" version of Windows *w/o bloatware).

well I gave it a go and it did and didnt work.

I had only the option to install a fresh copy no option to upgrade, also no option to format my hard drive so i went ahead with the fresh copy which said all files on this partition would be lost.

once installed i found 20gig of my hard drive used up but no programs installed, all my old programs were still in folders in the program folder.

everything else worked fine once i used the drivers and utilities disc that came with the fjs.

I have however since obtained the proper disc and formatted and installed it the right way :)

Thanks.
