laptop fans not working ?

Good morning,
My boss 5 years old laptop HP COMPAQ 6735b recently overheats quickly and after maybe 20 minutes shuts down, most of the bottom is searing hot and the temperature sensor says over 100 celsius , the fans don't seem to blow at all.
Did a virus kill the fans or I turned them off by mistake? Where do I start to troubleshoot ? Please help , what can I do ?
this is not for gaming , it's an athlon x2 , 2ghz

There is no way to turn off laptop fans, if there were it would overheat within minutes. Most likely they just burned out. If he smokes, could have overloaded the fans after so long. Dust, smoke, animal hair are bad for fans. Most likely you'll have to replace the fans.
 
Is there a way to find out for sure the fans burned out? some software maybe.?
And how do I replace the fans?
Is it worth it ?
 
Can you hear the fans spinning when you start it up? Speedfan may help you determine if the fans are spinning but it all depends. Replacing fans on certain laptops is pretty difficult. Unless you have messed with something like this before, I wouldn't even attempt it. How much was the laptop? May just be better to get a new one.
 
This happened to my moms laptop a while back (tossed it 2 years ago)...

In short, the fans burned out and we couldn't replace them. She is on the go a lot and we got her an iPad2 instead..

I think you better save to get a new laptop or invest $10-20 on a cooling pad.. I have a Belkin cooling pad (F5L055) that keeps my Dell about 15°C cooler than without it..
