Is this illegal?

No difference at all, that would be illegal as well, without written permission from the author/copyright owner. Even if you own the book it would require permission or citation. And again yes i am aware that 000's of student do this everyday. It would be nice to think of a world where this was more of an issue than it is, but the fact is that people don’t read much these days. :(

well, there's one thing i'm wondering about that. i beleive what you are saying is true. sounds logical that doing that with books would be illegal as well. but that would kind of be entrapement. let me explain a little
ok, if you photocopy pages from a book without permission from the author, it's illegal right?
ok, but when you go to a library, at least any library i've ever been to, they have a copy machine there and they allow you to copy anything you want really...they just charge you for the paper and the use of the machine
so, in fact, would that not technically be entrapment?

and back on subject, the thing with the cd's is illegal, i am positive. because of the fact that you did not actually purchase that music. see, i have over 3000 songs on my computer. but almost all of them are from my cd's and my dad's. as this is my dad's computer, that is still legal.

only problem with that, which i can not be completely certain of, say you buy a cd, copy it to your computer, and then your cd gets stolen or lost or whatever. would you then technically have to delete that copy from your computer? as you no longer have evidence of once owning the cd?

Illegal activity: Call 999 / 911.

My sister did that on my machine and I got really pissed off and shouted for a while but then realised that I was being an idiot, she didn't know.

Regardless of the age, this topic made for a very interesting read. I know lots of people who go to the library, and rip songs off a CD. They used to copy cassettes when it was the cassette era. You do pay 90p to rent the CD, so you are paying something, but unless every library in the world pulls all CDs off the shelves, I can see that everybody will be ripping songs from the CDs they "borrow".

Here in the states librarys generallly only charge you if you are late bringing back the audio cd/book/dvd/etc.

Copying something that is copyrighted is copyright infringement, plain and simple. You are violating the IP rights of the artist or recording studio when you copy such media.

Indeed, I would not do it, nor would I ever start, I use a pay service such as We7 and Tesco download. =)

No it is not

As long as you are keeping them to yourself you can make copies of dvd's and cd's

It is just the reselling or giving away of them that is illegal

Isn't it that you're allowed "1 digital or physical" copy for backup reasons? And that's why people are 'storing it' on the internet.

but then wouldnt it be illegal for the library to rent them out? like movies, wher eit says "for private home use only"

There are copies of films that dont say that..they say "for rental only" or something. Thats what the library would use.

I used to think the same thing. But I have also heard that because of outdated copyright laws it is actually Illegal to copy music to your pc and to an MP3 player (although this is overlooked now I believe).

Renting and copying are two different things. Libraries also have to buy the same types of movies that dvd rental places use.
