can i measure how many watts my system consumes at any given time?
the reason im asking is because im buying a new power supply and i need to know how many watts ill be needing...
i dont need suggestions on which one to get i know all about psu's lol i just need to know if i can measure how many watts im using currently.

Not without a voltmeter. There's no information being sent from the PSU to motherboard with that type of info. But you can work out a reasonable estimate with a PSU calculator like this.

I won't bother to mention the other things about choosing a PSU, as you obviously know. :)

i used the calculator and it came up with 245w. i have a 450w psu, so whats the other 255w doing?

Something like this can be used. You can find "power usage meters" quite easily if you want to buy one.
That would be the most ideal way.

Your PSU only uses what it needs at a given time.
