i7-10700KF reaching 100°C in games

Hi
I'm experiencing very high CPU temps with my i7-10700KF, which reaches up to 100°C while gaming, according to HWiNFO64.

Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10700KF
  • Cooling: Corsair H60 AIO (pump at ~4300 RPM, dual fans set up in BIOS)
  • Motherboard: MSI Z490 Gaming Plus
  • GPU: RTX 3070
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 3000 MHz
  • Storage: NVMe SSD + HDD
  • PSU: Corsair 750W
  • OS: Freshly reinstalled Windows 11 (all drivers up to date)

Temps monitored via HWiNFO64:

  • Idle: ~35–40°C
  • Light games (Balatro + web browsing): ~60–65°C
  • Heavy games (Returnal): up to 100°C

The pump runs at full speed (~4300 RPM), thermal paste was reapplied, case airflow is clean and fans are set properly. One cooling tube feels warmer than the other, which suggests the loop is circulating.

What I've done so far:

  • Reapplied thermal paste
  • Cleaned the case and fans
  • Tuned fan curves in BIOS
  • Moved game to SSD
  • Closed unnecessary background apps
  • Updated all drivers
  • Monitored all temps via HWiNFO64

Yes I updated the bios after reinstalling windows 11 a few days ago.
The computer was a gift from someone, so I don't know how long it's been like this.

What do you have for case cooling? Is the rear fan pulling hot air out of the case? Is there front fans pulling cold air in? Where is the case located at? Hopefully not in a cabinet.

Validated temps using different software? The TJunction on that chip is 100oC, so technically "safe" but that really is way too high. Balatro should not have you in the 60s, at least.

H60 might just not be enough, depending on your airflow. Is it up against a filter or dense mesh that would restrict airflow?

Hi everyone,
Thanks a lot for your answers
Just a correction, it's not an H60 but a H100x

Latest motherboard bios? How long has it been this high? You really shouldn't be above 90 degrees at load.
=> Yes motherboad was updated just few days ago. I’m not sure how long the temps have been this high, someone gave me the computer a few days ago. The PC was originally bought in 2020.

=> have one fan at the back, four in the front, two on the top, and two on the H100x mounted at the bottom. Looking at the fan logos, the airflow direction seems correct : https://imgur.com/a/AiR7mxz . Usually, the case is in an open cabinet (front and back are open), but I did my test with the case on the floor with no obstructions around it.

=> No, I only tested with HWiNFO64. I thought the max safe temp for this CPU was 90°C. Sometimes I saw it go as high as 102–103°C if I remember correctly.

Again, it’s actually a H100x, not an H60, sorry for the confusion.
There is a dust filter at the bottom, as you can partially see in the bottom-left corner of the third picture I posted earlier:

Can't really tell from the picture on the orientation of your rig. Is your build inverted? Trying to figure out how you've configured your AIO layout.

I'm trying to figure out if your pump's above or below the radiator.

Install realtemp and see what it says.

select one of the locations and download the zip file. Unzip it and run realtemp. Post the results.

=> The radiator is mounted at the bottom of the case, with two fans on top pushing air out of the case. The pump (the Corsair circular block with the illuminated logo) is mounted on the CPU, above the radiator. So yes, the pump is above the radiator.
You can see it on this pic :
install realtemp and see what it says.
=> If it's okay with you, I already have two screenshots from HWMonitor and MSI AfterBurner. The game was already running at the start, and a few minutes before it ended, the game was closed

One of the rare times pictures actually confuse me more. The heck is going on there.
Exactly, sure would love to see picture of it backed out so we can see the full picture. That looks just ass backwards to me.

=>the computer was hanging on a wall in the previous owner's home, and I think the computer was the other way round (down was up and up was down). Do you think I should put it on the floor in the opposite position?
the pic of the back is here :

Sorry to say but with a case mod like that its possible it had incorrect airflow and has somehow damaged cpu and possibly motherboard. A suggestion would be to ask whoever had it before you if they checked cpu temps at all. Could also be a pump/radiator issue but I'm not familiar with how those work.

Your radiator should be above your pump, guessing your H100 isn't moving liquid as well as it should.

There's a lot of jank with this, not gonna lie. If the internal hardware is good, I'd grab a cheap case and rebuild it properly.

On a second look, is that AIO cooler in the bottom pressed against the bottom of the case? Are there vents there, and if so, does the case have feet or is it just trapped against the table? You're strangling your CPU cooler one way or another I think.

I tried to upside down the computer and now the computer is like that (there is a glass on the top fyi) :
I launched the game returnal again and i have these Hwmonitor & Hwinfo64 show me that it's 100°C again (sorry it's in french) : . When i'm just on the web browser i have 55-65 °C

Also I've just realized that a screw is missing from the watercolling casing. I bought the "4studs115x 1200 1366" here but i'll receive it in 14 days

there is a little space between the radiotor and the glass above and it looks like a little space also between the radiator and the back :

Oh good lord, yeah get that glass panel off and you should be golden. You're lucky you didn't cook it, 100oC is thermal shut down so makes sense you were seeing that. The AIO is useless as is with the glass there.

I still suggest a new case. I'd have some words for whoever built that...
