About 6 or 7 years ago it happened to me. Using and playing with remote software.
Just sat at my computer one day and seen my mouse moving and exploring all my directories. I wasn't fixing nothing. shut down and started over. A military wipe.
Suspected a port sniffer was to blame.
Normally regular people like yourself aren't hacked.
Everybody is a target today - that is how they build large botnets.
There's really no step by step guide, as every attack is different. A good rule of thumb is to have a good firewall, either on your PC or on your router. Make sure you are not on the DMZ, and only forward ports you absolutely need. That's different than being hacked though.
I don't see the difference. I only see a difference in intent, and you still have some rootkit of a kind to get rid of.
