How to have 1280x720 resolution on 4:3 17" monitor?

I'm thinking of buying the VGA cable for the 360 to play it on my monitor, my only question is, since 720p is 1280x720 resolution (not normally found on 4:3 monitors), how will it be handled? Will it stretch the image to fit the screen? Or will it letterbox it? And is there any way to find out what would happen before buying the cable? I have a 17" Dell E177FP Monitor, and the only close resolutions I have are 1280x1024 and 1280x768 (which looks stretched out).

I'm pretty sure that the screen would display at both of these resolutions, and if the Xbox details are set to output to a 4:3 screen, then 1280 x 1024 is the best resolution, but if it is set to 16:9, use the buttons on your monitor and the controls on the Xbox to set it to letterbox. I can't guaranteee this because I don't have a 360 any more, but I'm pretty sure that this configuration should work.

If you have a LCD (which it looks like you do), you should be able to choose between stretching the image or having black bars on both sides.

xbox 360 game(s) are render in HD (720p 1080i/p) 4.3 (854 x 480) the 360 dose not have a option for black bars. it depends on the game or monitor, i know most widescreen monitors support black bars, but im not to sure about 4.3 monitor

well anyways what will happen is the picture will be cut off or smashed up to fit the screen, at 480p the printing will be all most unreadable same goes for picture quality.
