I buy my phones outright but I've always had a Vodafone Contract SIM in them.
First phone: 6 months
Second phone: 1 year
Third phone: 1 year 9 months
Fourth phone: 1 year 8 months (still use this one as a backup and I still use it everyday, but it was my primary phone for 1 year 8 months and I have owned it for 2 years 8 months)
Current phone: 1 year (and no plans to replace it any time soon, especially since I'll upgrade to Windows 10 on it for free and I want to spend my money on other things)
I haven't ever spent more than £80 on my phones. I either just buy the cheap models because I don't really require (or can afford) the higher-end models or I get them as 'hand me downs' from my family or buy them used off colleagues. I always used to prefer to spend my money on PC components and now it's camera lenses.
